  • My online experience thus far

Ok, I've been playing Quake online now for over a month. I have enjoyed it alot. Met alot of nice, helpful and fun people. As you probably know by now - I'm on a Mac. I use ProQuake and love alot of it's features. However, due to the inability for me to get decent fps with the OpenGL version - I'm stuck with the software renderer.

I've noticed alot of things about the software version though. I've seen it discussed on these forums. I just love the way the lighting is rendered in the software version. Rockets truly light up corridors and banish the shadows for a brief period. The OpenGL version is really dulled in comparison.

It also makes it harder to see people standing in the shadows. For instance, up against the wall at the mega health in DM6

I've been thinking that even if I (in the future) get decent fps with the accelerated version, I think I just might stay with the software renderer - I guess 50% cringe at the sight of the blocky pixels, 49% will be overcome with a huge feeling of nostalgia and 1% will actually find it beautiful in its own way.

I have alot still to learn but I enjoy the challenge. I mostly play at bigfoot.quake1.net It's a fairly populated server. I've seen at some sites people talking about juggling with the shaft. What is that? Rocket launching the enemy in the air and keeping 'em there with the shaft?

I've also tried some QW, I know that's a sensitive topic - but I just can't wrap my head around what the difference is. I know it uses prediction but other than that?

Yes, juggling with the shaft is such as you stated.

QuakeWorld has different physics than Quake, which makes a huge difference in gameplay. For example, you can jump farther in QuakeWorld, you can also bunny hop a lot better.

I'm glad you're enjoying your online play though. Are you located in the USA or across seas? Asking because you say you play on bigfoot.quake1.net a lot, and that's not in the USA.

Juggling, allright, now that I know what it is - I can practice it

Yeah, the few times I've tried QW I noticed that rocketjumping was alot easier.

I'm located in Sweden, that's why I play on EU servers. I'm gonna give the US ones a try though. Any servers that will welcome a relative newbie?

ping's not that much of a disadvantage if its around 100-135 and you can compensate the packet loss by looking where you are heading and use maths (speed, time, direction in some kind of weird formula i can do in my head) to predict where you will jump to next. the problem i find i have in quakeworld is i jitter between where i lost the packet, t0 where i will be in my travel, and end up farther from the second point anyways [:S?] so i cant do the formula because the jitter is throwing me off. FU?MIND?CK

i also find math helps when aiming for someone because you want to shoot at there feet, so you have to see where they are going, predict their evasive move, think of the rockets speed, choose the correct trajectory/angle to meet the point where the rocket/ground/player will connect.. and err it gets more stuff maybe i ....
