Ok, I've been playing Quake online now for over a month. I have enjoyed it alot. Met alot of nice, helpful and fun people. As you probably know by now - I'm on a Mac. I use ProQuake and love alot of it's features. However, due to the inability for me to get decent fps with the OpenGL version - I'm stuck with the software renderer.
I've noticed alot of things about the software version though. I've seen it discussed on these forums. I just love the way the lighting is rendered in the software version. Rockets truly light up corridors and banish the shadows for a brief period. The OpenGL version is really dulled in comparison.
It also makes it harder to see people standing in the shadows. For instance, up against the wall at the mega health in DM6
I've been thinking that even if I (in the future) get decent fps with the accelerated version, I think I just might stay with the software renderer - I guess 50% cringe at the sight of the blocky pixels, 49% will be overcome with a huge feeling of nostalgia and 1% will actually find it beautiful in its own way.
I have alot still to learn but I enjoy the challenge. I mostly play at bigfoot.quake1.net It's a fairly populated server. I've seen at some sites people talking about juggling with the shaft. What is that? Rocket launching the enemy in the air and keeping 'em there with the shaft?
I've also tried some QW, I know that's a sensitive topic - but I just can't wrap my head around what the difference is. I know it uses prediction but other than that?
