I was a kid when I first saw the Vore duo and after a massive fight with the Cthon boss I was WTF?!?!?
On retrospect, I hate to say it but in the context they probably should have made some other monster for it- demi-boss monster duos need to be either roughly shambler-sized (especially if there have already been shamblers)- or are something extremely dynamic- eg mobile or with a major (and flashy) power).
Looking back on all of the enemies ever made in a Quake- I would say the best candidates are Kona's remade Elemental (Nehahra) Barons- they're big, fast, leap around and use all kinds of wierd attacks that are only JUST easy enough to survive the first try.
Although strangely, I actually agree that a couple of Vores actually made quite a good boss at the end of Episode 3!
But seriously- four and a half times using Vores as an end-of-episode boss- let alone end-of-level is silly.
