  • Speaking of Llamas...Llama as a game term

The term llama as used in a video game, generally and basically means a lame player, right?
Well, I have always been curious how exactly this came about.
Quake 1 is the first time I heard llama being used in games, but was it ever used before Quake 1?
I played a lot of Wolf3d, but skipped Doom 1 + 2, and went straight to Quake1. So, maybe it started in Doom?

I am just kinda wondering the origin of the term. Does anyone know?
And, why llama, not some other animal? Is it because llama is close to lame?

Or actually, when did "camper" start being used? The first time for me to hear it was again Quake 1, but maybe earlier?

I kind of miss the fact that llama isn't used in online FPS shooters anymore.... It seems it died out with Q1, maybe some Q2. But I didn't hear it used in games after that.... I guess nowdays, the different forms of "noob", "nub", "newbie" etc has taken llama's place....

But somehow, saying "You're such a noob" is not as fun as "You're such a llama!!"

Kind of interesting, since llamas are supposed to be pretty cool farm animals used to defend the other animals. They usually can see a wolf/coyote coming at them and are known for fending them off.

Wow, I didn't know that. That is interesting to know!
I think it mostly started because llama sounds and spelt like lame.

The use of llamas in video games was started by Maxis back in SimCity.

Really? I was a hardcore Simcity classic player for awhile, too (I even had the horrible C64 port). I don't remember the term llama being used....

The name "llama" has been used for a wide variety of descriptions for people and items alike within general computing and gaming industries. Within some computing environments, the label "llama" has been derogatory indicating a person with little knowledge and new to the environment. Acronyms have been spelled similarly to llama and thus pronounced as llama. The llama has proved to be quite popular among some simulation games. Also the llama has been made popular in many movies, such as Napoleon Dynamite and the Disney film The Emperor's New Groove, as well as in several Monty Python sketches and the opening credits of Monty Python and The Holy Grail. The label "llama" is also used in game shows as a term for a contestant who leaves the game show with nothing.

I am not so curious about the definition or how it is used, but WHEN it started as a term for being lame. We all know it was used in Quake 1, but I wonder if that was the beginning or was it used in some other video game. Or maybe outside video games and then transferred into Quake 1?
