  • Impulse 22 newb question...

Just got back into q1, been a longgg long time.

Im simply trying to make the grapple usable in maps I load up.
I start quake, im using fuhquake, pull down the con and load a map.

I have impulse 22 bound, but it's not working.
    Thanks in advance.

Use +hook, not impulse 22, thats the much older method of hooking.

Not that I'm doubting you...I'll sure try it at home.

The part that is confusing is impulse 22 works on the servers I connect to, but not maps I load up to practice in...

depends on the mod. Monster is just used to RuneQuake, don't listen to him jk

Im assuming it's quakeworld cause im using fuhquake.

Ill just run fuhquake, type /map rampage(for example), and my grapple doesn't work.

If I play rampage ONLINE it works, Im trying to get it to work offline.
Do I need some server files or something?

you need to run a mod, quake itself can't hook

edit: ok ill explain. The server runs the mod that allows hook. People connecting to the server adapt to the server's mod and can use hook as well. In order for you to use hook locally, you must run the mod.

            -game modfoldername

Sniper has the correct answer. And in Quakeworld, it's going to be impulse 22 and it will probably only work on CTF servers, although any QW RQ/Artifact servers should allow +hook.

If quakeworld is the mod, then yes. But I thought quakeworld was a server engine...

No! It's a server side modification and you play on a QW server where you need files, like a CTF, QW will auto download anything you need.

If you want to use a hook on a QW server, try a QW CTF server or one of these servers that does have a grappling hook:

                    qw.shmack.net:27500
                    quake.msmcs.net:27500
                    hoh.dtdns.net:27500
                    hoh.dtdns.net:27506

And, if it interests you, you might also consider trying NetQuake (which is where many of us here play regularly), especially if you are in the USA, by downloading either QRack or ProQuake and jumping on grappling hook supporting server like quake.shmack.net, quake.intertex.net (CTF) or quake.ihoc.net.

Im sorry but now im seriously confused.
Is qrack, ezquake, fuhquake all just front ends for quake?

                      Why netquake over quakeworld?

Before I breakdown and uninstall/reinstall quake for qrack, what is the advantage of qrack over fuhquake over quakeworld?

I did connect to the servers, I do like the offhand hook, but that shmack thing is insane!! lol looks fun!

Qrack, EZQuake, FuhQuake, are all client engines, based on qwcl.exe. I guess you could indeed say they are in a way 'front ends'. Quakeworld is the game.

Quakeworld is run on a server, and you use a quakeworld client to connect to it. Alternatively, the server runs a mod (e.g. runequake) and you can still use any Quakeworld client to connect to this server, because mods are server-side.

The advantage Qrack and FuhQuake have over the default QuakeWorld client (qwcl.exe or glqwcl.exe) is that they have improved graphics, and a few extra features like enhanced menus and interpolation. However you should be able to connect to a server with *any* of these clients, whatever's your preference.

QuakeWorld, the game, was based on NetQuake, which is what Quake initially was. NetQuake is more suitable for singleplayer and LAN play. QuakeWorld is an optimized version for internet play. NetQuake and QuakeWorld are both games, which have separate multiplayer protocols, and are therefore incompatible.

Qrack is a *netquake* client. And netquake (original quake) is suitable for internet play as well, you just need a good connection (i.e. not dialup). Some players, like myself, prefer the "feel" of the netquake netcode without qw's prediction, which feels wacky to me.

You don't need to uninstall/reinstall anything.

The QRack installer I linked you to uses it's own folder --- qrack --- and if you choose to uninstall it, it can be easily done from Add-Remove Programs in the control panel and will not affect your Quake in any way.

                            It's hassle free.

                              Think I got it..
So would it be o.k to have ezquake, and qrack? One for each?

Are my configs going to be compatible?

I'd imagine that qrack would just disregard inappropriate commands.
