  • What source port??

Oh dear God. My computer seems to be trying its utmost hardest not to let me play Quake1. I can't play the original Quake because I'm on XP. I had used GLQuake which was awesome but recently just stopped working, looking like this:

I tried TyrQuake, but in fullscreen mode it sometimes just randomly hangs and I have to restart my computer, and in windowed mode it responds to keyboard presses like once a second! And of course the GL mode looks like above.

Tenebrae - NO. E3M3 is all screwy and the whole thing is riddled with bugs.

ezQuake is for only multiplayer and half the effects have gone.

Darkplaces doesn't work with the Quake Injector for some reason and the gun flare for it moves back and forth for the Nailgun and the Super Nailgun turns inside out when you stop firing. Also, ezQuake and Darkplaces both put tons of ammo in E1M1 which ruins the fun.

FitzQuake looks like the above image.

I've run out of choices. Can someone please tell me a reliable engine which actually works and that doesn't remove any of the effects (maybe software rendered)? Thanks for any help.

You can try either sguirRe's GLQuake, or aguirRe's WinQuake... check it out here The Homepage of Bengt Jardrup

OTOH, I suspect something wrong with your GFX card... weird you have such behaviour :/

The GLQuake appeared just the same, and the WinQuake screwed up my computer as soon as I opened it. Sorry.

Well, it sort of works, but when I start a game in Normal skill, it plays it in nightmare skill instead!

Haha! It's OK! Thanks for helping, people, but I fixed the problem myself by trying to run a GL port in windowed mode. Now it works like a charm!

Thanks for all your responses and for trying to help.

ProQuake 4 is an automatic for any computer. There is no Windows computer it doesn't run on.

ProQuake 4: The official continuation of ProQuake

Try the glpro400.exe and if that fails the d3dpro400.exe will work.

It looks like your graphics card is borked... you might want to try reinstalling quake though as the files could have got corrupted.

Why doesn't anybody ever mention Qrack!? you all are a bunch of ignorant fools!

Just kidding, I understand why people would like the other Quake source ports. I just personally feel that Qrack has some features that give it an advantage over the others, plus it has the best fps on my system. Darkplaces is great too, but when you start disabling the over-the-top graphics to make it look more like the original Quake, it is nearly the same as Qrack - only with slightly less features. The only thing that Qrack lacks is support for the most demanding modern SP maps.

I geared ProQuake 4 to always work on any machine all time and never not ... and that was his issue -- that he couldn't get Quake to run.

That being said, he said ezQuake runs so I bet Qrack runs on his machine too.

Does that ever work for anyone ever? Quake is just an exe and 2 pak files.

I think the point was to help him get quake running on his rig, Pq or fitz to start, as they are less taxing and more stable, then he can lean forward. BTW my C64 cant get out of console, what do i do now?
