Howdy! PLEASE forgive me if this is the wrong place to place this thread, and please redirect me if I'm in the bad. I used to play Quake with my dad and bro every weekend over the LAN and LOVED IT! To make a long story short, we all got busy doing other stuff and haven't played together (pretty much abandoned gamerville) in YEARS. During Thanksgiving we were all together so I decided to download the shareware winquake on all three of our laptops (Alienware Aurora m7100 WINXP / ASUS M71 WIN7x64 / HP DV6000 WINVISTA) and it actually worked pretty good over the LAN. I ended up putting it on the home PC (also winXP) and used it as the host and didn't experience any lockups or anything...BUT the graphics were pretty lousy. No "GL" like I remembered. Also, NO CHEATS. I don't remember how we used to do it, but we used to all have ALL WEAPONS, now we start with the cheasy 4-10guage splattergun and that's it. SO, the question is this: is there a way to improve the graphics on Quake 1 (can buy full version if req'd) AND is there a way to mod ALL WEAPONS in LAN mode? Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Hi Jacob,
I must admit I haven't tried the shareware version so I'm not sure of what works and what doesn't. If you start a single player game and type impulse 9 in the console it will enable all weapons, give you full ammo and issue you with the relevant keys (gold, silver). I've not tried this in multiplayer Deathmatch or coop mode but I would suggest that this probably wont work.
There may well be a console command you can enter on the server or some flag you can add on your command line for startup and I'm sure that one of the Quake Gurus will chip in here.
Some server mods have what is termed a Practise or "praccy" mode which has the same effect each time you respawn plus your ammo doesn't depleat. If this is what you are after you might try downloading and configuring CRMOD or the Runequake mod as these mods have this option.
To improve the graphics you could try either QRack or Darkplaces which has significantly more eye candy than the regular Quake. I would suggest that it might also be advisable to download the latest version of the proquake as this has numerous bug fixes in it and other options (inc auto map download) which might improve your quake experience.
Hope this helps

Thanks guys. I'll try some of that stuff out. Hopefully the latest proquake will stop my laptop from locking up hard as a rock. I got SLI-7900's and 3G of RAM, I know quake isn't pushing any of that to the limits, so hopefully just an original build glitch. Yea JohnRocker, I'm 32, bro is 36, and Paw is 56. We get together on holidays and the occasional weekend and LAN ALL NIGHT! Its more fun when you're all in the same room vs. playing over the net.
