Black shaft?

So I was just watching this
Lets Play Archive
I was watcihing the quake one(Its a very good playthrough)and in the wizards manse up to the wind tunnels the shaft beam is black.Anybody know why its like that?I checked all the ezquake options but nothing seemed to make it black and I think its pretty cool so if anybody knows how to get it like that then ill appreciate the help.and does anybody know how to get the hud also?Thanks in advance

They may have modified the lightning texture in the wad file or its a gfx error on the driver.
