  • Observer-bot

Lightly browsing google and the Quakeone.com forums, I don't see any mention of bots designed to observe.

Whose ever heard of an observer-bot berry?! Why would you want an observer-bot?

I was thinking (and I admit I do a lot of it): How cool would it have been to capture a moment in game play time when something really funny or unexpected happened and there was no demo recording.

Now picture this.... a quake server that could summon...1..2..3 or more observer-bots that roam around the map in various states of 'person'ed' (i.e.: 1st, 3rd, passive) perspective. The bot's auto-saved demoed points-of-view are cached to a server for review by users later. The saved demos have a limited life span -- to give the user a chance to snatch them up before they expire, freeing up server space for new demos.

    A DVR Quake...if you will....

Brilliant idea, but I shudder to think of asking every admin to get that one demo from that game that one day... maybe stamp 'em with the date, time and server name and make 'em public?

if the media could be viewed outside Quake (for example, the service automatically records via JoeQuake "avi capture mode" rather than creating .demo's , and automatically post to a youtube acct,or something like it. The only catch is,the bandwidth best be unlimited or else that service could rape a monthly quota

oldendirt: Exactly, I was thinking demos would be time stamped and uploaded to a public folder accessible via web browser... maybe a 24 hour life on the demos to accommodate server space through attrition.

Mindf!3ldzX: Ideally that would be awesome for the end user... but your right, a demo file would use significantly less space than an avi..

Personally, I would like to see the demo files posted first, and allow the user to have the burden of converting the files. Maybe there is a utility somewhere that can convert demos into media files.

"Observer-bot, the other other other OTHER...white meat."
            "Observer-bot, it's what for dinner"

Besides the application of having a glorified Quake DVR, I can think of other utilities a bot like this could have.

I could see room for speculation, but... an observer-bot could be an administrative-aid and a referee.

Administrative-aid: (behavior much like an IRC channel bot) To help with "yes" votes when idle players (not in AFK mode) are not there to vote. To help administrate kicks/bans, and text spam. To protect registered users from fraudulent use of their name. Censorship of language.

Referee: Warns, "outs", &or kills players who hover in an area to long that would be considered camping or spamming. Auto team building by random or profile. Spawns REAPER BOTS to kill infidels!!!!!!

            -----
Also, (as mentioned in another thread: 4956-flash-quake-michael-rennie):

If you can get (i.e.) a virtual machine at a display resolution of 320x240 to connect to a Quake server with an observer-bot; you could use video streaming services to display what the observer-bot sees on to a web site. The point of this would be used to view real time matches without needing to load a client.
