This may be due to the new firewall that is installed on HDz's servers.

Fairpoint FAST (Ex-Verizon FIOS) in Southern NH @ 7:30AM EST

            quake.crmod.com - 44ms
            dm.clanhdz.com - no response
            speaknow.quakeone.com - 39ms

Your pings might be more stable with xDSL in your area or FTTH, if available. But you'd likely have to live with lower download/upload speeds with xDSL.

Cable can be shit if your neighborhood node is oversubscribed. But that shouldn't be a problem in the early morning hours.

It's a crapshoot, as far as pings go; a luck-of-the-draw type deal. ISPs usually only market the flashy DL/UP speeds, rather than their network's stability or smoothness.

Like he said, it really depends on your location and the quality of the lines in the area plus amount of people.

I use OptimumOnline, and get decent pings. These are tracert's to popular server locations for me:

              Chicago: 9 hops 30ms avg
              NY: 10 hops 8ms avg
              Virginia: 13 hops 15ms avg
St Louis: 17 hops 43ms avg
              Denver: 12 hops 60ms avg

I hate to say this -- other than the fact I don't hate to say this at all -- ditch Time Warner and go with AT&T DSL.

Even with AT&T's $19.95 per month 768 KB but get the first 3 months free plan, you will get a ping everywhere far superior

I canceled cable a few months ago due to that irresistible offer.

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I get good ping times on Time Warner Cable. My speedtest results:

Sub 60 ping, everywhere AT&T Xtreme DSL 6.0 ,47.99/per month. Not bad, but Uverse 10mbit down/1mbit up is cheaper than the service I have, unfortunately Uverse is not in my area yet. This will be my next ISP unless Cable comes around.
