  • My Quake mod idea!

What about a mod where you have to hold a certain position on the map for a certain amount of time (20seconds) to get your team a point? kind of like CTF only capturing whole bases/positions with maybe 3 to 4 bases per map (I'm thinkin 16 player games so huge maps will work better).

    Possible cool features!

    Hoverpack
The hoverpack is a "very light weight highly sophisticated piece of hardware, once placed on the bottom of your standard Quake Marine Boots(use your imagination), simply *rocket jump in the air, press the activator button and you will begin to temporarily hover in midair at a gradual depleting altitude.

This technique is useful for evading and flanking enemies in mid air, ambush missions, improved general movement.

Teleporters - They aren't just for humans anymore!

Everything from ?bullets?/grenades to ?LG? can be successfully shot through teleporters rendering them on the other side (hopefully still in the same direction heh)

L.B.E.D.S -Lightweight Base Entry Defense System
This is more of a mapper thing I would think but installing turrets that spray the area when an enemy is detected, usually easy avoidable, but if there's enemy back up the tides turn quickly!

    Respawns
While fragging is still quite possible (and quite fun) getting fragged will respawn you to a ?random? position your side/team currently is in command of. Think (Star Trek Teleporters but spawns instead!

Theres still a few more ideas floating around but I just wanted to list what I had off the top of my head. Feel free to add your thoughts!

Didn't that new DM mod Baker/Rook/whoever was working on a year or two ago allow weapons to shoot through teleporters? That was quite awesome if I remember correctly...

What if the four positions were controlled by orbs. Instead of flags. Four orbs spawn in the middle of the map. Four "bases" are separated, yet connecting hallways etc. You have to hold the ball carried into the goal and then defend it until your teammates get the ball into the other goals 8 on 8 = two men sub teams per goal

All these options are do able.
Hoverpack could feel like lunar lander, but mechnics might be like a CTF hook.
I've done the teleport trick before but I cant remmeber if there were any drawbacks to it.
I have some turret code laying about also..

Sounds kind of like control point in tf2. That would be fun to port to Quake.

runequake advanced , or runequake plus,or one of those random foking odd-ball runequake mod's, had that feature. shooting through teleporters that is. The same mod that featured that riff raff also featured the "turn into a monster" option, like on start could turn into a fiend at top right side of "Easy]Normal[Hard" ledge. or you got some weird shit. I truely miss those weird ass versions of RQ. like turning into a monster and being a monster and slashing some mafakka up is just 2 awesome.

I always wanted a teleporter you could see the output of.

So you could see the guys on the other end of the teleporter and they could see you.

                  And you could shoot through

Sounds like that Control Point stuff UT introduced, it was called Domination there. It was fun on maps that were made for it. Shooting through teles is also pretty cool, I think Q4 has it by default (or Q4Max introduced it, dunno).

Unsure about that jetpack thingie, hovering in a place sounds like suicide to me.

More like if your running and use jet pack its the same effect as jumping then slowly gliding down if you hold the jump button down, other wise if you tap the jump button you will preform a standard jump, so its completely controllable!

There was a jetpack in IHOC, wasn't there? I like the hook for air travelling.

Good ol' Zopmod lets you shoot projectiles through teleporters. I've found problems with it, though... For example, some teleporters' touch space is not the same as the visible swirly area (noticeable in dm4). Additionally, calculating the exit angle of the projectile can be ugly if the teleporter can be reached on two sides (dm6).

Zop the Fish is a mod about controlling a fish to gain frags... it's either carryable or set in a certain location. I found that a repeating sound and glowing dots (eg spawnshield effect in runequake) is necessary to have hope of finding a player carrying it and hiding somewhere. Unfortunately, it's not enough with many of the medium to large levels.

A mod I've been thinking about involves picking up randomly placed items that give boosts. (No, not runes!) The items upgrade the weapons in some manner, or give time to use on an anytime activatable quad/pent... similar to those classic top-down view arcade games. I'm still looking for something to help out the lesser skilled players so they can have fun, too, else the good players will end up with most powerful weapons.

How about ramp-jumping instead of a hoverpack, like in Q4.

I thought these sounded familiar, the teleporters in the DMP mod allow Rockets through TPs (just tested this and it does work!) and the Autosentries in the Painkeep mod are pretty close to the LBEDS.
[Heads up to Baker] I did talk to RocketGuy about combining 90% of these 2 mods together but understandable he is finding it difficult to get the motivation to do it.

It still sounds like a fun mod idea though

you could make the jet pack if you looked at the source code from the fly cheat code and change it it to a device but it would be hard to make it so you would only fly when you press jump while running or something similar
