  • Custom NPC models

I very rarely see purely custom models for player/NPCs, although there are a load of custom skins and textures that modders use (onto the original Quake models) to make new monsters, and also pure custom weapon models.

Is this because it is extremely difficult to create entirely new animated models?

Also, if there are any mods which use new models, which ones?

Making models that look good and animating them is a lot of work. Making them compile to Quake 1 model format is even more work [and working within Q1's limitations and barriers]. [Although QWalk by Sajt may take out some of this pain]. So new models are far less common.

Retexturing usually involves pulling a skin into a Photoshop and working on it --- not to dismiss the difficulty of doing a quality retexture.

As a result, there are lot more retextures than new models.

But there are a few mods with different player models:

    1. Kurok Kurok
    2. OpenQuartz Open Quartz | Download Open Quartz software for free at SourceForge.net
    3. QMatrix Quake Matrix

    Come to mind.
