  • Is someone making a free quake?

The source is released GPL, the map source is released GPL, much of the 2d graphics has been redone in high res. Is there a project out there to make a fully free quake? I would think the models would need to be redone, some more graphics, the sounds, and the trademarks would need to be removed.

Maybe, then get bundled into linux better, and the community will grow again!

I think I got quake running once without id1's pak files. The main issue was the models, it's not quite playable without them, but they can be added later or symlinked.

I thought Baker already did with Synq?

Synq's on hold, for however long...or finished I'm not sure, I think Baker considered it a proof of concept and left it as is. He's doing mostly engine work for the time being I believe.

But he's doing engine work that supports Tzunami, which can be looked at as a spiritual successor to Synq.

Also I dont believe Synq is completely gpl compliant, we'll see what baker has to say, he'll likely be the very next reply lol

Synq was pretty basic... textures didn't get much fancier than solid colors. Hell, I could have done the texturing for Synq, lol

Yeah it was a hodgepodge of sourced materials. Fugly. But I'm pretty sure baker only intended to prove it could be done.
