  • Baker, Which PQ?

    Baker,

I just upgraded my OS to win7, and i'm having a few issues with framerate vs stability. it seems net_sys_highpriority or net_syshighpriority no longer works in pq 4.51 which is what i'm currently using.

Is there a PQ version that is more win7 friendly. I don't need 800fps, i'd be happy with 200 fps and non-choppy (sometimes so choppy i get icon'd) gameplay. Any suggestions? I've tried using V-sync, but the actual game play itself is so off from what i'm used to, i'm looking at v-sync as a last resort.

    Thanks,

    -Rev

Don't have Win 7 so no ideas there at this time ... I need to get ahold of a Win 7 laptop for a few days to do testing.

However, I think the cvar you are looking for is sys_highpriority. It works on Vista. Hopefully it works on Win 7. I'm not sure if it will solve your problems, but sometimes it makes things work better for me.

[This cvar can give ProQuake higher CPU priority, should also be available in Engine X.

    sys_highpriority 0 = normal
    sys_highpriority 1 = high
    sys_highpriority -1 = low

Generally not messing with it is the best choice. Setting high priority can sometimes interfere with the mouse polling.]

K... thanks anyway. As of right now, i've had to alter basically every video setting there is... oh well, i'll eventually find something that works.

I can use d3dpro451 nicely! Windows 7 even, no compatibility settings required.

Have you tried Omega drivers, or even Guru3d drivers

yeah, i had omega drivers to begin with and NOTHING was working with those, so i upgraded to win7 drivers... what i've found has gotten me closest back to normal is dx8pro cmd line -mem 512 -zone 8192 and turning the maxfps down to like 300. I play with a 800x600 (4:3) resolution, increasing my resolution to 1280x1024 in game while lowering my fps helped too, that's using regular proquake.

                  i'm gonna give d3d a try now.

-mem 512 is like 4 times as much memory as ProQuake could ever need to run anything. -mem 128 would be more reasonable, but if you have 2 GB RAM or so I guess it doesn't really matter --- but ProQuake won't be using anything above 128 mem for anything.

The zone param is unnecessary. ProQuake allocates a full 1 MB for aliases and such.

dx8pro is more reliable and more flexible than d3dpro, d3dpro is ever so slightly faster but with a lot less features than dx8pro. dx8pro won't crash on you, d3dpro can crash on some maps.
