  • What is it about Quake 1?

    G'day guys.

I'm starting this thread to get some of your views as to why we all think that Quake 1 has stood the test of time and is still so popular among us faithful.

So, what is it about Quake 1 that has kept you coming back?

    For me, it's two things:

The level design in this game (for the most part) is as close to flawless as any game I've ever seen. (I'm talking generally about the Deathmatch maps). Nothing in any of the sequels came close to macthing the original - I mean, the Q4 engine didn't even have water!

Secondly, the weapons. Everything about them is perfect. From the models to the damage they inflict. There just seemed to be a certain authenticty about them that just wasn't there in the sequels.

So, that's my two cents. What is it for you?

    Vill.

you know what it is for me? I'm so used to Quake 1's feel, levels, weapons, physics, everything. I try the new games, esp like quake3, quake4 - I don't like starting from square 1 and having to relearn stuff, so I load quake1 back up and I know where I belong

plus.. I HATE the railgun, and sniping.. Quake1 is one of the only games that doesn't have that shit.

      Quake1 = ninja dodging rockets
Quake3 = whoever has biggest gun wins

      Quake1 > Quake3

plus the Quake1 guy runs faster

The weapons are great and well balanced.

I'd say the maps, but my favorite map is DM6 which is not much more than a box with a platform with a Red Armor that I like to camp. :d :d
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Spot on EFESS! The railgun is the biggest waste of time. Why did they even bother with that shit?

I personally like railguns, but they dont fit in with Quake.

Also Quake is actually a bigger case of "who has the biggest gun" as opposed to Q3A which is "who doesnt have the grenade launcher wins". Seriously, shotgun does 110 damage at close range, rocket is 100 or so, rail is 100, plasma gun does 20 damage per shot and its fully auto... Most of the guns in Q3A are the big guns.

However I am not here to praise Q3A, I just merely disagree with those criticisms. I like Q3A, but it is far from my favorite.

Actually from that sentence I would say... because of us faithful.

Quake has pretty good maps from the original release, and tried and true fun designs for single and multiplayer. Quake has atmosphere. Quake has more unique mods than anything else. Quake has culture and family. Quake has an outstanding community of people constantly extending it in different ways to always give us more to play.

Quake is lean meat that always fills and you can always season it your own way for a wonderful experience. Quake is one of the last games I played where I got a sense that love came out of its community.

                heheeeehe,, you're right...!

quake physics rule....! a lot of other games slow things down to be more realistic...

                i've stuck around for a few reasons;
                • 1) runes, CRMOD was getting boring.
                • 2)updated runes, classic runes were getting old.
                • 3)more maps, id1 maps are fun but nice to have a change sometimes, bda.essentrix.net has helped me there. I drag friends over to play when i can.
                • 4)made some good friends in quake.

I also hate railguns too, like when you get some leet guy who has like 90% railgun aim.

Quake is more about getting the big guns, RL and LG are the only really useful weapons in multiplayer quake. Quake has more strategy to it , the maps are made for strategy.

I totally agree with EFEss, I would rather just stick with quake1 and not have to learn something new again, because once I become good at quake3 and want to play quake1 again, I find out that my quake1 skills totally suck.

Well everyone seems to love the multiplayer, call me crazy but I love the Quake 1 sp. The atmosphere is still great and the levels just have this artistic feel to them. The monsters are extremely original and replaying my favourite maps has a very calming effect (my doctor says I have stress problem )
In addition the SP community has released huge amounts of high quality maps, some which take close to 45min to beat and great mods to.

                    Long live Quake sp.

Quake 1's graphics, maps, weapons, and overall feel is the reason.. The new 1st person view game creators have tryed way to hard to make the new games seem more "realistic" and "better" which in my opinion has made them less fun.. But maybe I am just "old school" as I have been playing Quake1 since it came out as shareware.... I need to fix my computer and remove these virues so can I play again.

I think for me the reason Quake 1 has stood the test of time is obviously all the reasons already stated......plus the mods are ever changing and can be fucked with easily......but most of all the community of quakers......it doesn't matter if your nice or an asshole on servers, you offer something to the game and the fact that you are there playing means that you are playing quake when you could be doing something else.......Of course I love to frag as much as the next person but when I frag certain people it makes me tingle inside

The most useful weapons for combat, not spamming or finishing off, or with a quad, are shaft and lg. Its not like your gonna pull out a shotgun in the middle of a heated firefight. It won't do much good.

The only reason I play Quake is to one day find the elisive DopeFish, in almost every single Quake match it can be found lurking just beyond one's FOV

Ladies and Gentlemen, I will not lie. I have not captured the Dopefish. But I have braught you the next best thing. The dopefish, on tape. If you are squemish you might not want to view the picture folks, if you have small kids in the room you should sheild their eyes, even pets maybe come uneasy around the mear sight of this twisted creature. Now, without further adu I give you. The dopefish on tape.
