  • I am dreaming about new engine powering Quake 5

It has been over 5 years since the last Quake single player game, and boy, movement and ability wise - to me it was pure garbage. My hopes of seeing Quake 5 and Hexen/Heretic 3 games, powered by a totally new engine, those would look like polished gem with the movement and ability features like in Quake 2 are now hollow... In what kind of stagnation Raven and iD are, that these developers just can not bring the same level of quality they have brought over a decade ago?

Ok, now from this point, do you believe that there will be no Quake 5 or Hexen 3 or Heretic 3? And if one day some of these titles will appear, i just pray that they will not be as shit-load slow and uncreative like Doom 3 and Quake 4 were.

Big business gaming is about catering to the mainstream and no major title is going to deviate from the modern formula.

id Software -- when they had a big technological edge over everyone else and were 4-5 guys working together eating pizza -- they could make whatever they wanted to. They were essentially an indie gaming company and due to the cutting edge technology in the day, whatever they made was going to sell.

It isn't stagnation, it is inertia and independence. Large companies don't have the freedom to do just whatever they want to do like a small startup can. If you are getting a big budget to do a game, you have to play it safe.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I think Quake 5 will use the same ID tech5 used by Doom4.

and i hope that we'll have the same athmosphere in both games: more obscure and horror-like than Q4 or Q2....

Are you blind? Because I found Doom 3 and Quake 4 awesome. And I never found movement and ability in Doom 3 or Quake 4 the same as their predecessors.

Sadly won't happen as with them doing DooM 4 it would be too similar in their eyes.
              DooM = hell + futuristic
              Quake = lovecraft + futuristic
to the general public - they are the same (although they are very different).

I personally would love to see a Quake which merges them together. To do this though you would need a new character and he would have to go through each game in a way. Like you start off with him in Q1 and he's in the base when it all goes wrong and you have a chapter of this. This would expand on the Q1 storyline in both prior, during and after Q1, from there you could have a chapter which happens between Q1 and Q2 - like the areas around the bases in Q1 are in ruins which has you basically on earth killing the survivors and this is where the Strogg see this is a perfect time to attack - leads into "Strogg Wars" era - remain on earth during Q2/Q4's events defending and then are called upon for another mission which takes place after Q4.
Could easily make a story based after Q4 - Kane is Strogg afterall - he turns? Goes MIA?

Of course this is far from a decent story, something like this is more for a mod. The Generations mod did a nice story - something similar would be great (take out the Q3 elements of the Vadigar)

              Earth Soldiers (Wolfenstein):
The Earth Soldiers are the ones directly responsible for the start of the "generational" faction split. Sgt. Blaze was the first gladiator to throw down his weapon in protest over the conditions in the Arena. As far as he was concerned, fighting for eterninty was one thing, but being submitted to outlandish energy weapons and freakish environments was more than he was willing to bear. He refused to fight until conditions changed. Others soon followed suit.

The "Sarge's" demands were simple; a return to simpler times. Blaze wished for the days when power was measured in big guns, not subatomic physics. Where environments were built by human architects, not immortal beings with no grasp for the laws of gravity. Sarge wasn't looking for a collection of platforms and uranium-slug rails; he wanted giant machineguns and levels he could truly call home.

Soon, others joined his side and split into different factions. The Vadrigar, faced with gladiators warring over words, not combat, were considerably perplexed. It took some time and considerable expenditure of their powers, but the Vadrigar accepted the terms and reinvented the arenas.

Now, Sarge and the others breathe a sigh of comfort in their newfound homes. One can occasionally see Sarge standing over the rooftop of an ancient archipelago, a pair of gatling guns propped up as he admires the world he helped reinvent. The moment is usually fleeting, however, as he pulls the mortar from over his shoulder to clear out the riff-raff fighting down below...

              DooM:
The Vadrigar's first attempts to take over the Earth Realm involved the corruption of the Nazis and the creation of their undead soldiers. When their plans failed, they pulled back, pursued the soldiers who foiled their invasion, and waited for a new opportunity.

That opportunity presented itself with the Union Aerospace Corporation. The UAC developed space colonies on Mars, setting up research and military facilities. They mined the planet, discovering the ancient gates the Vadrigar originally used to enter the Earth Realm.

The UAC's critical mistake was turning the Gates on.

The Vadrigar had been stealing alien races, mutating them into armies hell-bent on destruction, and planned to unleash Hell itself. When the time was right, these armies attacked, slaying the UAC personnel and mutating many of them into zombified soldiers. The plan was to take over the two moons of Mars, then Mars itself, then Earth.

              It nearly worked.

Those that survived (and eventually foiled) the Doom Wars were brought to the Arena. When the conflict within the Arenas began, those warriors banded together under a common cause. The current battles were close, but not quite. They longed for combat more fast-paced, action-oriented, and visceral. These soldiers now fight with bigger, faster, badder weapons, but also with chainsaws and even their bare hands.

The spirit of the warrior lives on...

              Slipgaters (Q1):
After the chaos of the Doom Wars, the Earth Realm fell into a Dark Ages... not only of technology, but of the human psyche as well. Only through the efforts of the UAC did humanity pull itself out of the depths of its post-apocalyptic environment.

The Vadrigar, meanwhile, attempted once again to exercise their grasp on the Earth Realm...

The UAC, with its new gothic surroundings, began work on "slipgates," transports based on the Martian Gate technology. Devised as a means of moving troops across the globe instantly, the slipgates ran into two difficulties. The first was that soldiers who entered the slipgates often returned insane, rewired for carnage and shooting anything that moved. The second, and much more important, was that an otherworldly being known as Quake was using the slipgates to bring his own troops to the Earth Realm. A task force was assembled, in hopes of tracking Quake to his home dimension and defeating him.

              They were too late.

Quake struck first, invading Slipgate Central with his forces. The base was completely destroyed. Only one soldier survived of the original task force. Undaunted, he continued onward, determined to defeat Quake's minions. He travelled through four dimensions and defeated Quake's second-in-command, Shub-Niggurath, before being stolen away to the Arenas Eternal.

When the split began among the gladiators, the Slipgaters that survived formed under one banner. Unlike most factions, they wished very little of actual changes. They did not wish to change the Arena so much as receive recognition of their influence on it. The environments and weaponry of the Arenas Eternal bore more semblance to their era than any moment before or after. Others fought before, and fought after... but the Slipgaters feel they fought best.

              Stogg Era (Q2 and I guess Q4):
The victory over Shub-Niggurath and the minions of Quake was enough to help pull the Earth Realm out of its mental stupor. A pattern of rebirth and regrowth ensued, bringing the planet into a period of wealth it had not seen since before the Doom Wars. The UAC bolstered such efforts through a massive space exploration program.

Already defeated thrice before, the Vadrigar prepared one final assault on the Earth Realm. They had attempted to defeat humanity with themselves, with races similar to their own, and with beings far beyond the Earth Realm's comprehension. This time around, they hoped to bring humanity's own technology against them.

The joy humanity shared for the new space exploration turned to horror when those same explorations upturned a new threat. A new race, the Strogg, had revealed themselves, attacking any who approached. A cyborg race, the Strogg began pursuing humanity... both for spare parts, and for food.

The Strogg had perfected a wormhole technology, allowing them to send ships directly to Earth to assault all of mankind. Enraged, the Earth forces unified together to use these wormholes to assault the Strogg directly, on their homeworld of Stroggos.

And so, every capable soldier joined under the UAC banner for Operation CounterStrike. Three gigantic motherships entered the wormhole, and came out in orbit over Stroggos. These ships then deployed thousands of soldiers, who began their D-day invasion.

It was a slaughter. The Strogg were prepared, and an EMP device set up in the capitol city of Cerberon blew three-fourths of the forces out of the sky the instant they entered the atmosphere. The remaining troops, scattered, were easily picked off by the organized Strogg forces.

Less than five percent of the troops survived the initial attack. Of those, a handful were able to penetrate the Strogg forces, disabling systems to allow a second airstrike to destroy the city. These forces worked their way into the heart of the military base, assassinating the Strogg's leader, the Makron.

Many of these souls were never rescued from Stroggos' surface. They were, however, snatched quite handily for the Arenas Eternal. These soldiers, left to fend for themselves, unified once more when the tumult began within the Arenas. Much like the Slipgaters, they wished to unite for the sake of identity. Of course, they had demands of their own. As Grunt simply stated, "Gimme back a REAL BFG."

              Q3:

Through several centuries and four epic wars, the Vadrigar had tried and failed time after time. Invasion after invasion failed, army after army crumbled, and warrior after warrior fell... often at the hands of a mere mortal. Their only solace has been to steal the warriors that have defeated them to fight within the Arenas Eternal.

Quake, master of the Arenas and one of the high members of the Vadrigar, had had enough. He intended to take over the Earth Realm once and for all... even if he had to do it himself.

And so, the pieces began to fall into place. While humanity evolved, free from the threat of outside invasion, Quake laid plans to invade Earth from within.

There was one person who stood in the way of Quake's rule on Earth. The Zen monk, Xaero, had noticed the changes in the universe that signaled Quake's arrival. Working quickly, he rushed to the source of Quake's arrival. With no other means to stop Quake, he did the only thing he could; he forced Quake to manifest himself inside of Xaero's own body.

Quake was outraged by Xaero's intrusion on his plans. Unable to free himself, he brought Xaero and himself back into the Arenas. Now trapped within Xaero's soul, Quake awaits Xaero's defeat at the hands of one of the Arena's warriors, so he may return to his rightful place as ruler of the Arena.

Xaero, meanwhile, merely awaits his just defeat in order to bring his own soul to peace.

lol no more to go on, that's all the story parts Generations has listed. However it's a great basis to start off of. It merges DooM->Quake->Quake 2.
I think it'd be great to have a Quake game that kinda follows this. Game starts off during the recovery of after DooM (make references to but not focused on - like UAC being mentioned when Slipgates were designed and say there was a "mishap" and that it's been improved upon and now it's referred to as a Slipgate - and have UAC logos around) and the start of Quake 1. Do like a DooM 3 intro where you walk around the base, interact with people. See some of your fellow marines walk into the slipgates. Also see a ward where previous marines are insane and murderous (the "Grunts"). Then basically the chapter would simply be hell breaks loose and you fight your way through. Instead of making it going through portals - as this would be more of a intro - you fight your way back to the surface from the base. Encountering mainly Grunts and Enforcers and unarmed versions of them (the ones in the ward) but have the occasional monsters around (coming through the other slipgates in the base). Could add in easter egg where you see a Marine grab a Axe mounted on a wall (would be a fire axe lol) and run towards another slipgate that's labeled to go to "name of other base". Would be a inaccessable area (see it behind bulletproof glass ect) - End chapter. FMV sequence showing a timelapse of the damage of Q1's event did to earth. Then start chapter 2 which would show the Stogg coming to earth. You fight some off but in the end - scripted sequence - you are taken down - either knocked out or severly wounded and a teammate saves you. Fade out. Wake up, find out your injuries left you in a coma for "however long Q2's events were" and they talk of Kane's victory but he is now on his new mission and then write some more on from there. Kane either turning, being killed (and they need you to take over), he's gone MIA and you're part of a rescue squad ect.
Since you would originate on Earth - instead of game basically starting on Stroggos - can easily bring in some classic weaponary that's been improved upon. Like a upgraded Shaft/Thunderbolt, Nailguns, BFG, HyperBlaster ect.
This would tie the games together (minus Q3 as it's a whole new game in itself without a story really)

I think that can be more than a single game., but many games, placed between Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake. It will be amazing!

Thats where you lost me totally.

I have played all the quake games, and from a gaming experience stand point, none of them related to each other in my opinion.

                        That's from "Generations Mod" story.
What I was saying it'd be nice to have Quake games tie in together. Story wise it is easy to pull off. For Q1 there's no story after - so you can add anything really.
Quake Wars + Q2/4 have no story prior. We know Strogg attacked earth (Quake Wars) we attacked back (Q2/4). Nothing prior.
So a story arc between the 2, ties them together.

As for the Vadigar part, read up on Q3. They are the real antagnoists in Q3 - not the monk. Q3 Revolution for the PS2 expanded on that part of the story. Klesk if I recall is a lesser Vadigar.
However the story I posted again was by Generations to tie all the games into Q3. My story idea was to tie Q1->Quake Wars->Q2/4 with making refrences to DooM (Portals->Slipgates, UAC logos). Start off in Q1 escaping base, Strogg see Earth in recovery due to damage of Q1's events (they did get into the bases - why not out?) And attack (strogg wars). This is where you are "defeated", recovery time happens during the counterattack (q2/4). Picks up right after Kane's events in Q4.
So a story arc between the events of the Slipgate era and Strogg era is possible as there is none. One can say DooM and Quake 2 are in the same universe -> BFG 9000 -> BFG 10k (10000) why not the Slipgates?
