    Hey dudes! :-P

My computer's not connecting with the servers ("Trying...still trying...still trying...no response").
I enter them manually because for some reason the server list never loads.
    I'm running ProQuake.
This is a recent development--maybe a day or two.

Any help/hints as to how to get back online would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    --Finny

Made any changes in the last day or two? I remember the Zone Alarm firewall would magically make me lag real bad in Quake... easily reproducable... on: mysterious lag, off: no lag, normal play.

You are using an outdated ProQuake that isn't able to get through your firewall or isn't able to deal without router.

ProQuake 4: The official continuation of ProQuake <---- modern ProQuake does not have this issue. Extract into your Quake folder. Double click the appropriate executable. Type connect quake.shmack.net in the console and it should work.

Ancient ProQuake can get confused by the presence of a router and try to use an unused ethernet ip to connect. Modern ProQuake doesn't have the issue. It was fixed around version 3.93 or so.

        Hey guys--thanks for your replies.

Baker, I did what you recommended. When I try to launch ProQuake it gives this error message:

        "W_LoadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad
Game date files are required to run; usually this means you need Quake shareware or registered version"

        Eh--wha??

        Help. :-/

          ADDENDUM:

Turned off router security to see what would happen & old version of ProQuake can connect just fine. When security on, old ProQuake won't connect but error message above received for ProQuake 4. :-/

You didn't put ProQuake in the correct folder.

Start your "old" ProQuake and type "path" in the console. That is where your Quake folder is.

Open that folder and put the newer ProQuake executables in there.

For instance, my Quake folder structure is as such:

            c:\quake
c:\quake\glpro452.exe <---- ProQuake goes in the base Quake folder
            c:\quake\id1\pak0.pak
c:\quake\id1\pak1.pak (The pak files are the Quake data files)

Or for you it could be something like this:

            c:\Program Files\Quake
c:\Program Files\Quake\glpro452.exe <---- ProQuake goes in the base Quake folder
            c:\Program Files\Quake\id1\pak0.pak
c:\Program Files\Quake\id1\pak1.pak (The pak files are the Quake data files)

Whereever you put the new ProQuake files, they go in base Quake folder that contains an id1 subfolder.
