How to get quake 1 to work on steam.

Grab the new GL quake from: ProQuake 4: The official continuation of ProQuake

Extract the compressed file to: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\"

The path may vary depends where your steam is but it will be in "Steam\steamapps\common\quake\"

    Rename glquake.exe to glquake.bak.

Rename the new glpro451.exe to glquake.exe

Load quake in steam, it will ask what you want to run.

    Select GL Qauke.

    And your good to go.

Also additional maps etc, can be snagged for diff mods, and just throw em into the id1/maps folder of the steam install of quake 1.

    ~Cheers hope this is helpful.

Couldn't you simply copy pak0 from the steam directory to a normal Quake installation, i.e. a directory with some engine downloaded from the internet?

(Other ways to get Quake running never hurt of course and I'm sure that info will be useful for someone, just asking.)

Well yeah, just if ya use steam.

You get to see how much "HRS" you play quake.

Which i find neat... as its catching up to L4D series, and killing floor.

Which is why i got it to work with steam client.

A norm quake install is a hell'a lot easier then making quake work with steam.

I think if I knew how many hours I played I'd shoot myself

I should really stop hating on Steam, since its the only place you can buy new copies of Quake and the Id Store fails now days?

Yeah, i also bought Dark Forces on Steam so i dont have to enter 24 lines in dosbox manually.

There's a win32 port for Dark Forces called DarkXL. It's written from scratch, and they're trying to make it as faithful to the original as possible. Currently it's in Beta and the game is basically fully playable, though there are some glitches with game crashes.

Or, just go to Games -> add a non steam game to my library... it won't track your time played, but it will be in your Steam library and you'll get the Steam community in game.

Steam community VS Quakeone.com , in terms of numbers???

I can't fathom other places when it comes to multiplayer experience.

Darkplaces can bring in players. Monster's NewDM server runs on Darkplaces, so it works with the DP server browser... meaning anyone running DP can go to the server browser and see his server, just like newer games work. When I ran a FvF server on DP, I got a lot of new players too... unfortunately niether Gunter or Lordhavoc want to tweak FvF/DP to work together so I'm stuck running it on proquake.
