Highly possible it can be legit. However back when I was living in Edmonton still 2 of my best friends were the Manager/Asst Manager's of the EB Games near me. I did get a "big box" for the first Gears of War from them (almost lucked out and got a Quake 4 one). The quality is FAR from $8100 he's asking. It's basically the same material you find on action figure packages. As I said previously you can make a 100% accurate replica for under $50. Many printing places will do private work for that price.
For the bootleg part, this box could of been from 1996, but he aquired it in '97 when the retailer was getting rid of it. Advertising for Q1 was still around until 1998 - as that's when "The Offering" boxset was released (Q1 + MP1 + MP2)
