  • Just a thankyou.

    Been playing Quake on and off since it was released and nothing is like the original. Sure its dated and low tech compared to modern games, but.. it has a mood, a sinister quality .. that gnaws at the black depths of the soul. No game in history has given us such a perfect combination of out and out action mixed with an almost palpable sense of dread. It took me an all night computer session to get all of the mods I wanted and to modify them further to suit my taste so I can't even imagine all of the effort that went into the original works.

    Quake is not just a game, it has become much more than that. It is an expression of dark art. All truly magnificent games are such not because of their realism but rather because of their ability to take you away from what is real. To twist your mind, to imerse you in whatever emotion the devolopers want you to be immersed in. Thanks to all that have put in their hard work to keep quake going.

    Now if someone would GET IT... and give us another good game that acutally has a soul. They are rare and far between indeed.

    I hope Quake 5 is mind blowingly sexy.

    Cthulhu fights, hes 700 ft tall, epicness.

    Not Doom3 lets go hide in closets and play with small cubes or Quake 4's inability to hack it as anything but a techdemo of Doom3 with light... Something truly grand feeling like its bigger then everything and its about to come thru that slipgate!

      On a side note, has anyone made a mod where gibs stay.. permanently? I don't want new gibs, I like the bloody slabs of meat look of the original, I just want them to .. stay. I want to walk through a level I have conquered, practiacally wading through heaps of the carnage I have laid upon the heads of my foes.

      P.S. High res versions of the original gibs, that stay, would totally rule my Universe.

          Id should overload their to-do list, spend countless hours designing a MMORPG-saga, design 75% of their maps/media based on that style, make over zealous screenies and promises, then in the last 4 weeks of production, scrap all that and hammer out another sequential "stay alive and get out of where you are" game then it wil be exactly like quake 1.

                high-res gibs like this and this?
                here, have 'em!; sorry, shameless self plug, I know, but its all I can do to help i'm afraid.
                But as for keeping them permanently, I do remember KQP had gibs that stayed on all the time, if you're good with code (or know somone who is anyone care to help..?) maybe you can find the bit that does this? sorry but thats not my department I'm afraid...

                  I remember Baker quoting some very true words from leilolei.
                  Now that I have more contact with QC, I can confirm it:

                  "QuakeC is all about .nextthink"

                  The lines, that make the gibs disappear are
                  new.think = SUB_Remove;
                  new.nextthink = time + 10 + random()*10;
                  Delete them, and they will stay forever (just like the head gib).

                    Guess I am as sick as you , well, maybe not so much with regard to the gibs. That was like one of the first things I did with my mod, was make them sub-gibbable, meaning you can destroy them some more, and they dont disappear as fast, but they eventually will disappear. Monster was messing with this for a while on his new DM mod server, and he included the gyro mod so that they move when some nearby force is imposed on them, such as, rocket explosion or a shotgun hit.....but they dont take damage.

                    I also got mine to float in the water when they are created, and they are solid and you need to swim around them else you are blocked. Similar to my corpse's that also float in water, and are gibbable....but you can push the corpses aside by swimming into them...the gibs eventually disappear either way, because I think if you dont remove them, you will overload the resources...at least in standard Quake. Darkplaces might ignore all the excess entities, but if you have a big game with lots of players and action, those extra things floating around can be a game impedance.

                      Thanks for the info. I like those hi res classic gibs, will be sure to install them. To me the classic looking gibs make more sense because of their generic look. What I mean is that its absolutely silly seeing the same set of man sized ribs that come out of a human also come out of the scrag, the fiend and even the shambler. While slabs of meat.. well they are just slabs of meat, they could come from anyting.

                      Never actually modded quake code but will give it a shot. Wonder if those lines could be removed each startup using config.cfg lines?

                      Also thanks to you cobalt, will give the pack a try, more gibs and and floating corpses may satisfy my need for carnage as well.

                      Hey if you are going to indulge your dark side.. don't bullshit around about it.

                        totally agreed, and rediculously chunky gibs are part of what makes quake what it is!
                        It all adds to the 1996 flavoured nostalgia!

                          I can make the gibs stay if you want but there is a limit to how much entities can be around so, if you have a lot of gibs it will crash eventually.

                          I had this silly script that would spawn mobs of monsters onto the map, and by accident I messed up the time so suddenly there were hundreds of entities spawning in, just to be telefragged because there were so many monsters on the map, the gibs was insane lol. I somehow managed to live a whole 5 seconds to witness the entire map covered in gibs and blood it was hilarious.

                            It's really easy to make gibs stay you just go into QuakeC code, to player.qc

                            in their is a function call ThrowGibs

                            change

                            Code:
                            new.think = SUB_Remove;
                            to something like this

                            Code:
                            new.think = dummy;
                            then paste this

                            Code:
                            void() Dummy =
                            {
                            // make it wait some time
                              self.nextthink = time + 10 + random()*10;

                            // eventually remove it if you want
                            // or you can make gib showers where gibs throw gibs throw gibs lol

                            }; // don't forget the semicolon
                            above ThrowGib and they should stay.

                            For me Quake has a special place in my heart because of modding, even though I stopped playing it for a long time and haven't modded in years, the memories of all the crazy stuff I did or wanted to do but couldn't.. haha. It has a soul, id never realized how big it was though.

                              Well I wasn't aware of the entities thing so maybe i will just mod its so the gibs stay oh 1 full minute.. at least so they are not vanishing into thin air right before my eyes. I enjoy playing Quake cooperative with my brother and friends and the occasional light hearted death match. Great to play when i just want to chill and listen to music after work. Goes great with Doom Metal and industrial.

                              Thanks
