$500 per year? Is it a dedicated server with the site and other stuff running on it? Ronnie at ultimategameserver.com might be able to get you a cheaper rate than that.

Why don't you guys just get permission to use the DNS from shmack and host it at killzone chicago or wherever else?

Frenzy is correct. Patrick is correct also. Shmack is the only purely casual server left. Everything else is too hardcore and...dare I use the term, elitest for casual and new players. Shmack is just way too public to close down. All the other servers we have up, you practically need an invitation just to join the damn game...

DK.. there is a reason why in Qlive newbs get paired with newb servers and so forth.. the truth is, neither side can handle the other until newbs can get better in their own realm and then move their way up the ladder to play with better players..

It's an atrocity for oldschool players that have been around for years and know the intricacies of the game to play a guy who's bumping into walls and shooting air in a DM, CA, or CTF match.. and often the skilled players have to carry the 'newb' against other skilled players.. so there are too many cons for the 'elitists' to play with newbs and for good reason..

In populated games like COD/BF etc, no one really gives a shit about newbs because it's a pub server with a tonne of players (eg. if Mtown was still up I'd never complain about newbies) but when you're playing games with purely skilled people who all know one another and you're trying to win, this is when things change..

...isn't that what I said? I'm not trying to point out why the other servers are bad for newer/casual players, I'm trying to point out that Shmack needs to stay. Not that I really need to say anything at all. Just thought I'd throw my pair of pennies in.

I can host it on hdz and if slot is willing to transfer the shmack.net dns to us too, we can have an ip point to that address.

I thought the tone was a little harsh toward skilled players, I was simply defending our union

Not sure why that would be irritating for the skilled elite players , who already know they are the elite, to stop and slow down a bit and help new people on occasion. Any kind of community has new people....its a positive sign that what you are doing is attracting interest. If you cant respond to the interest in a positive way, theres some kind of conflict of interest going on. Then Id say make a private server somewhere and schedule regular times with those die hard players - no need to have it posted as a public server if new people who come in are going to be hassled. Yea the days of full servers are gone, so if you want to populate the servers again with real humans - not bots, like all the quake 3 ET servers have, you have to walk the walk and have some tolerance and patience. I get annoyed at this too sometimes, but the honor has been passed to us now and the younger crowd
looks up to the more experienced player as a role model. If they dont see any attraction in the character, they will simpley load up another game, theres tons of em out there now, and not a never ending supply of new people like there use to be.

We're not in the day and age where servers are real populated, which is the exact reason why newbs can't compete with better players. All the elite players ask is that the newbs practice a bit amongst newbs (ie. Shmack) and come back when they're half decent, or just tolerable.. you can't have guys with keyboard skills trying to play a game because it ruins it for good players..

Each game has it's own culture, like I said previously other games you can integrate newbs and skilled players because it's evened out across the board.. where as in Quake it would be like

                      4 skilled vs 3 skilled + 1 newb = terrible and stacked

TDM is trying to facilitate having newer players for the most part.. and guys improved before playing the game, but you have to know the basics/fundamentals if you want to play.. otherwise it won't be fun for either party..

We used to play Erols CA in the old days with newbs and "pros" alike and it didn't matter no one cared.. but today the population is so scarce that in my opinion it only works in the way I mentioned.. become half decent with other newbs in a pub, then move your way up when you know some fundamentals otherwise you're just ruining it for good players.

What I say is definitely terrible and unfair to newbies who want to play the game with everyone else, sure, but this is Quake1 not COD.. 'fresh' blood is far and few at this point.. so you just have to accept the environment as is.. we've been trying to convince the group think that DM3 needs to be 'force warped' for years in a map rotation just like any other game but people voted against it. This is Quake, people want the same old and don't wish for changes at this point because it's a stagnant dead game as it is.

Popular fun mods that attract players are always important to the Quake 1 community. When Trinicom when down we lost 90% of the daily ctf activity.

With each door that closes another door should open. Slot covered the RuneQuake, CRMOD, RA sectors of the Quake Universe!

Sad, but true. This is one of the bigger reasons you don't see me online much anymore (for those of you who dare to point out that me, The Death Knight, the definative voice of Quakeone, doesn't know anything about Quake). I'm much too young and have much too much of an attention deficit to play the same thing every day. But, like I started out saying, it's sad, but true. If that's what the majority wants, let em have their fun...

...but please, o reaper of servers, don't take Shmack away from us! I'm flat broke at the moment, or I'd offer to front the money for it myself.

Trinicom is still up and running! Weird thing, though, it's not on the list of servers on the home page. No one is ever there

Trinicom was closed long ago , just like when Hating tried closing its doors and then decided to re-open them, it was a complete failure.

jerking the rug out from the players feet, and expecting them to land on their feet, is a big tall order, especially when the rug is jerked out from under your feet, and there isn't a focal point like Quakeone.com to refer back to.
