  • Quake help please.

Hello, I'm a newbie here and I need some help.

    1. I'm using winquake on a laptop, Windows 7 and the resolution is a small window size in the middle of the screen with everything else filled with black.

    2. Every now and then the color of the game randomly messes up to look completely rainbowish. Can be fixed if I touch an item but could mess up again.

    3. I'm also using darkplaces (question 2 isn't a problem here), and I have the high res regeel texture pack and the bestiary pack. The problem is that sometimes the zombies are invizible for some reason and the game freezes up and I have to exists to the desktop when I pick up the rune on the first episode.

      Hi FF
With regard to question 1 you might find it easier to download a much newer client than Winquake. Perhaps proquake might be a good place to start as I'm told it has a variety of bug fixes and may be more stable than Winquake. One method of changing the resolution is via the command line you use to start quake.
For example you could use something along these lines substituting your own width and height requirements.

      Code:
YourQuakeEngine.exe -noipx -width 640 -height 480 -bpp 32 -heapsize 131072 -game proquake -dinput
      Hope this helps

Hello, thanks for the reply. I can actually change the resolution in the options menue but if I enlarge the game screen, the menu screan and the HUD bar at the bottom shrink to where I can barely read anything on them.

I am trying proquake but It says "Create the subdirectory id1/locs and put the .loc files there", it already has a id1 file with the paks in it but I don't see/know what locs files are.

Im also getting an annoying issue with darkplaces where i'm just playing the game and out of nowhere the game exits to the desktop with a quake error saying, Mem_Alloc: out of memory (allox at gl_textures.c:561)

            Hi FF
It's my understanding that the "loc" files are often used by those players who like to play team games and use them to advise their team mates of their location in a particular map. They often have binds attached to a desired key so that can just press it and it will broadcast to their team things like
"I'm at the red armour, 2 health and 10 rockets". These have historically been an optional add on rather than part of the standard install. Perhaps Baker's changed that recently but I've never used them with proquake and as far as I know do not have any file resembling a "loc" file.
However, those fiendish little coders can put such things inside a .pak file.

            Hope this helps

There is a command, something along the lines of con_textsize or something of this nature (that's what it is in QRACK), but if you type con then push tab it may be one of those. I'm not familiar with Darkplaces commands, who can help him change that stuff?

proquake shouldn't ask for locs, if it does just make a folder inside id1 called locs

                  Though it shouldn't matter.

Less it does that b/c it auto downloads stuff now.

Shrugs. I use locs but all my locs are inside my pak file.

Anyways, good luck as for the context size stuff sometimes they are in the options an ur staring right at them... and sometimes they are these weird con_ "press tab" in console to tab thru similar commands and uh its one of these weird textsizes like they mentioned above.

I use proquake b/c its simple u run it and it goes and it looks like i remember it.

Whereas qrack and darkplaces requires some more configurings.

Darkplaces looks nice but its not complete vinella quake/ with the particales and stuff being diff then proquake b/c its a diff client, it does have a proquake setting in the options but i find its still considerably different.

Shrugs but, w/e. to each their own.

For Darkplaces the commands I used are "vid_conwidth" and "vid_conheight" to adjust the HUD size. I set them them to half my resolution. I like that size best. Default should be vid_conwidth 640 and vid_conheight 480. Making those numbers smaller will make the size larger. This might help a bit.
