quake shotgun.... based on real weapon, or not?

hey all,

ive remade lots of stuff from quake in secondlife, and ive already made several weapons, but something just came to my realization....
the shotgun has no pick-ups or such, and thus id have no clue how the rest of the weapon would look.


so the next thing i was wondering, cuz of the strange design of the shotgun:
is the shotgun from quake based on a real existing weapon, or is it just something made up by ID?

and if it is based on an existing weapon, which weapon would this be?
cuz ive seen tons of shotguns, but never anything which even closely resembles the strange design of the quake shotgun


anyone who could help me on this would be greatly appreciated.

as it is now i couldnt possible remake the weapon cuz all i know is how the barrel looks.
and i hope it is actually based on a real weapon so i can rebuild it. it would be a shame if it was just something made up by ID and i wouldnt be able to remake it

or any help if it was a made-up design by ID is great too, like if anyone knows if it is known how the rest of the weapon would look like,
like mebbe from earlier development or such?

I sure it's just something they made up and went with on the fly. I believe
it's supposed to be just a short pump action. Yet I remember getting some models from qtest and the shotgun had some kind of bolt action shit going on. So when I think of weapon #1 i think its some kind of freak child of the shotgun and a Obrez; which is a freak child of a carbine and a goddamn pirate pistol.

metchsteekle, that "obrez" you've shown is Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle with shortened barrel and butt. Such weapon was widespread enough in first after-war years in Soviet Unoin and Poland, but not much later.

Usually term "obrez" means something like this:

And it is closer to Quake's SSG tnan to SG.

SG is something like pump-action Spas-12 or Remington 870, IMHO.

I don't think any of the Quake weapons was based on any real weapon. It was 1996, that was just not fashionable yet.

The pickup model we use in RMQ looks like a single barrel variant of the SSG. Maybe add a visible pump mechanism to that.

According to John Romero they used all kinds of toy weapons as mock-ups for doom and quake..

thanx for that pic, that looks exactly like the SSG from quake, that helps me a lot too,
so i dont have to go figure out which weapon the SSG is


anyways.... back to the shotgun....

ive looked up pics of remington 870 and spas 12, but none of all the pics that come up seem to resemble the quake shotgun

anyways... the shotgun from quake looks like a standard shotgun, expect for the pieces on the side, which dont seem to resemble anything....

oh wait, after just looking at the shotgun again i just realized what that those brown pieces on sides of the shotgun are... they're the top of the wooden pump under the barrel *facepalms*

i never before realized what those brown pieces were supposed to resemble


now that i know that, it could indeed be a reminhton 870 with pump action and wooden stock...

could it be perhaps be that its supposed to be something like this gun?


comparing what the shotgun on hud in quake looks like with that weapon actually looks like it could very well be that one?
just try imagining that gun when turned so you look straight down the barrel, it would look pretty much like how the shotgun in quake looks like

yes, no? or anybody have an idea what gun the quake shotgun is more likely supposed to be?
