  • Quake - My discovery

Hello, i'm new here. It's nice to be a member of the Quake community. This game is really the shit. I just wanted to say how i got into Quake from a player that only plays PS3 games.

It all started when i saw this clip:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1ZtBCpo0eU]If Quake was done today - YouTube[/ame]

I think that clip attracted a lot of new players to the first Quake game because it looks amazing compared to modern days FPS games. My reaction was "damn...games nowadays are like a stupid kindergarden teacher who forces you to go to the next destination by pulling your ear all the time" No freedom whatsoever. Too much programed sequences and...you know the rest.

I'm more of a console player as i said. I only played Quake 2 on the PS1 when i was a kid. That game was just average, and to me the beginning of the standard FPS games that we have today. I tought that the first Quake was just like the second one. Boy was i wrong when i first played the game 2 weeks ago.

This really has to be one of the greatest games ever, especially when you combine it with the DarkPlaces mod engine. I was blown away a million times of the sheer awesomness. This is exactly the game i needed. There's a lot to explain, but i don't want to make the text too long. I will never forget this summer, the summer where i discovered a not forgotten by some, but by most players nowadays, a game that was the games of games and everybody talked about back in the days. Quake.

I just wonder when FPS games will go back to it's roots. They knew how to make level designs back in the days let me tell you that. And i wanted to say thanks to those people who devoted themselves to mod this game. a FANTASTIC JOB. You can't really say in this age which is the best FPS game ever, but to me, this comes first, second, Duke Nukem 3D and third, Crysis 1

That video reminded me of a series of pictures showing the evolution of gaming (in reddit's eyes)

Evolution Of Gaming According To /v/ - Imgur

Dark Souls was a great game that barely told you what to do and how to play so at least some companies still have the right idea.

Amen to that. I also have a PS3 (and PSP, PS2, Dreamcast, Neo Geo CDZ) with lots of games. The PS3 just gathers dust in the corner. Right now I started playing Quake again.

I also play Dreamcast a lot (some good titles are Jet Set Radio, Karous, Under Defeat, Rival Schools/Moero Justice Gakuen).

On MAME I love danmaku (bullet storm) type shooters.

Neo Geo also has same really good games.

And there's another game that gives me a rough beating every time: crafty (it's a chess engine: crafty and winboard is to chess what Quake is to 1st-person shooters).

You see, I like my games dipped in shitstorm sprinkled with Rubiks cubes.

Almost all games that come out nowadays are just awful and a waste of time, because designers are afraid of trying anything new. Why make a good game when instead they can cash in with another WWII shooter? Same goes for "indy" game developers, the stuff they produce may look creative when compared to what EA does, but it's nothing compared to the creativity and replayability I find in many classic games.

Yea man i'm with you. I guess you haven't tried the new Max Payne game. That game is a sad example. The original 2001 (never played the second one) is in a completely different league.

Same think with Duke Nukem Forever. It wasn't even near as good as Duke Nukem 3D. What will be the standard style of gaming after the scripted, ultra linear, no magic, style ones? Fate will tell...And what's up with this trend that in almost EVERY GAME nowadays your maximum capacity of weapons are like 2 to 3. Four in some games.

After playing Quake with modified graphics, these kind of toughts came into my head. I'm playing a game that looks like a modern game but it doesn't feel like one. That's rare to me. And not a feeling i always get.

Maybe it's hard to some of you to understand, but it was really a blast from the past. It's just too awesome. Sooooo many people that will miss this

More devouted modders should remake old classics without changing the gameplay. It should have it's own genre name, like REBORN CLASSICS! I'm just in love with this game...

Today i was in Dimension 3, i don't remember the name of that map, anyhow, it was this plattform that you must stand on, and what was really cool in some kind of a twisted way was that it was a mural of Jesus Christ's head covered in blood on that plattform. Man, that was just sick in some kind of way, but still awesome. That mural was so badass, the level designs are just sooo sick in this game. The DarkPlaces engine really makes it beautiful

Is it time for me to poop on the party and say that Quake II was a better game? OK, that's up for debate (or not - ha ha ha) but what I will say is this.

If you've only every played the PS1 version of Quake II then you owe it to yourself to get hold of the PC version and give it a spin. The PS1 version was not a good port - so much content missing, so many changes - but the fact that they were even able to get something running on that platform was a success in itself. The PC version is the Real Thing.

The only thing PS1 Quake II offered was full-featured awesome 4 players on a console Deathmatch, the translation of that portion was atleast pretty faithful. The damned single player story however, was BUTCHERED if I recall correctly, even the maps was butchered, because I owned both versions , the PS version I bought because I wanted my kids to play Quake with me,and at the time, they only wanted to play Console games which, isn't the case anymore, and none of us use the consoles anymore hah.

Quake2 PC > Quake2 PSX , by miles and miles.

On a further note. I think i will be trying Quake 2 after seeing some PC Walktroughs of it. Huge maps, secret areas. Damn you PS1! Why even make a inferior version of it. But i like the theme much more in Quake 1 than 2. I guess the first one reminded too much of Doom so Carmack decided to change that OR it was that Romero wasn't working for ID anymore at that time

I always found it funny when the soldiers spot you in Quake 2 they will have this weird sound "Deeyyy!"

Guess to my sadness when i found out that this Quake 2 music was only in the PS1 version. Nostalgia rush...
