  • Reboot quake

I heard John Carmack of ID was considering rebooting the series. I always hated q2 and never really got into q3. I was more into the gothic mid-evil satanic quake that I was in the futuristic one. I think thats what made the game, it was more violent and tastefully morbid and pushed the boundries and made it a great game. Q2 didnt even interest me in the slightest. I say we bug the shit out of his facebook page until he caves in and reboots the series with the cthon style maps, only with 21st century graphics. The gameplay of quake is what set it apart, the weapons, the music, the theme, the monsters, the secrets, the graphics, none of it was generic. kjsp1 avanipalla prassada was an amazing sp map because it was the first white quake map I had ever seen. Now THAT was different. Never tried q4, sure the graphics were up to date, but it didnt interest me in terms of playability.

same reply as to everyone asking about a quake sequel:
there is no reboot in the make, all carmack said is that IF they ever make a new quake it might be a reboot.

so there's nothing actually in the making, it was mere speculation.
it were just some thoughts of carmack, nothing more
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

In his Quakecon panel this year he talked about Doom4. I think that (or Rage2) will be the next project.

          Today's word is SPECULATION.
Sometimes it sucks being the harbinger of bad news must be the bad guy, or girl in this case.

If it happens, it will come after DOOM 4 (which looked to me like a DOOM 2 reboot).

Doom 4 is definitely the next project, no question about that. The scoop on a possible Quake 5 is that there is a bunch of people in id who think that rebooting the Q1 style would be a more interesting direction than doing more Strogg stuff, but that's really all there is to say of it at the moment. It's nice and fun to speculate for sure, but don't go getting any hopes up, and definitely don't go getting any ideas that anyone has promised this will be what the next Quake might look like.

I have a completely different view of this.

Nothing is stopping all of the awesome and highly talented/skilled people here from making a Quake reboot. Don't "we all" contribute to such a thing all of the time?

                Tea monsters - Ogre
Nahuel / Smith - HUD (& other mods)
                Ruohis - Ranger
                Seven - SMC mods

What is not a Quake 1 reboot about these submissions? Epsilon could even be considered A Quake reboot. If I didn't throw something you did in a list it is only because I wasn't trying to write a book. Obviously other contributors (like Oopee, Splitter, Webangel, GDiddy, golden_boy, more) could easily be added to the list. Lets not forget ALL the engine developers that make it possible for current content to be used or those that continue development of compatible mapping IDE's or those that develop upgraded model formats and the import/export scripts to be able to make them or all those that have supplied us with the gazillion maps available.

We are the Quake 1 Reboot. What about Schism (formerly RMQ) or Nehahra? Scout's Journey may be a Q1 reboot. Even In The Shadows could be considered some form of a Quake 1 Reboot. Hasn't Q1 been rebooted over and over again? If I was Carmack I wouldn't make a reboot either - "I" already gave you the entire game and all the possibilities that come with it. For him to make a Quake 1 reboot would essentially be like him becoming a modder for his own game (lol).

Why are we "dieing" to buy Q1 2.0, when our very community has given us ALL of the necessary tools/possibilities to build it ourselves, for free? How many times has this actually already been done? What is Carmack gonna do that we can't? Is it not official just because Carmack didn't make it? What reboot has Carmack ever made? Isn't it always "on to the next idea and group of possibilities"? Is it possible that if he DID do this it would murder Q1 original?

A reboot would entail new monsters, weapons, items, traps & environments with possibly a new trick or two to game-play, all with an original Q1 feel - don't we already have shit-loads of this?

                right?

That's pretty much what I was thinking, but only with a lot more words. Hm... maybe they're looking for a "different" Q1. Changes in the core game mechanics, not just a visual facelift.

I agree with your assessment for the most part, but I think the last thing that is definitely needed to complete the package is multi-core cpu support in DP. Then we will have the full power to more enjoy all the works of these talented individuals here!!!

                      This sounds intriguing...
MadGypsy is right, we have all the tools.
Why not start from scratch... first come up with a story-line, a good plot with a few twists. Design more elaborate maps with more detail. Design a few new monsters, and naturally include a the old ones. Improve the old weapons, maybe a few new ones. Improved UI for more weapons.
This would indeed be monumental project and a great challenge for all who would involve themselves. But it would truly be worth it.

And yes, as foq said, the gameplay also needs some upgrades, but while still keeping the things that make the game great. Mainly add new features, for example sneaking ducking, heck why not crawling, add a own animation for jumping, w_weapons, handgrenades, pick up random stuff to use as axe.. whatever you can think of, add all the improvements that have been created by our fine modders etc...
And call the whole thing Quake Resurrection, but nothing cheesy or cool, it needs to be meaningful

What made quake , quake was the levels... Secrets, simple but stunningly powerful weapons that made you feel like a god when you gibbed something, the archetecture, even keep the same monsters with better ai and add a few new ones, only with better graphics. I SO preferred the gothic dark quake over the futuristic quake. I hated Q2. i ALWAYS LOVED THE PULSAR GUN IN ROGUE DISSILLUSION

No doubt! Really, the point wasn't to "mention" anyone. The point was this community has been working on multiple Q1 reboots and reboot elements for God only knows how long. It's all already right here. Carmack would probably have to hire people from here to make the game faithfully. How ironic is that? Y'all want a Q1 reboot and he would have to hire y'all to make it...LOL!

                          I can see it now...

Carmack: "Er, Tea Monster, can I use your Ogre for my Q1 reboot?"
Carmack: "Web Angel, can I use some of your shaders? See, I'm making a Q1 reboot and.."
Carmack: "Baaaaaker my man, I'm putting together this Q1 reboot and I could really use an engine...."
Carmack: "Hiya golden_boy. My name is John Carmack. I made the first Quake. I saw the work you are doing on Scout's Journey and I could really use a guy like you. Ya see, I'm thinkin about making a Q1 reboot..."

Hmmm...maybe y'all should hold off and wait for a check.
