How common do you think it is for someone to use a hacked eyes.mdl (often changed to the player model itself)?
I've never placed much faith in the invisibility ring.

Such a silly hack. I'd imagine some people do it. Is there a way to store the proper eyes.mdl on the server and force the client to load the one from the server?
I've been called out for having "eye hacks" on the Shmack server,and I think it more bullshit from the "WAAAAAH YOU STOMPED MY ASS IN QUAKE LETS MAKE UP EXCUSES WHY ITS SO" . I am willing to bet $ that the reason this post even EXISTS is because of fn Scoffer/SurferGirl and others who constantly see those main 2 always griping someones cheating.
Example : The other day King Scoffer was calling SG (whoever this is) a cheater/hax/etc , no sooner than Scoffer left than SG was saying/doing the exact same shit Scoffer was to me.
Yugo2hecK had it RIGHT when he changed from eyes model to TWO Nails. Those fucking things was about 95% impossible to see.
JPG had it right when his security.dll checked for matching models ,except he locked out every fn other engine at the time.... (or whatever his shit did,pretty sure it cross checked server content w/ client content and mismatch = failed)
I personally think invisible should = invisible. to think the ring is 'good for everything except your eyeballs' is a bit off the reservation.

wouldnt an easier way to solve this is just make the server progs.dat turn the model to 100% transparency when someone uses the invisibility? that way it wont matter if a person uses a different mdl cuz itll be set to 100% transparent anyway and people wont see it anyway
isnt that possible? just an idea, no clue if thats possible in quake. but if it is, wouldnt it insta-solve this problem?
pretty sure we have multiple routes availible to us but which one appeases 99.9% of the community is the harder task. I personally have no problems seeing the eyes, my vision is like a T-Rex obv. Motion = kill it.
yeah i can get some people would start moaning about not being able to see the eyes when using that method of preventing cheating but id think it would be the best method, since it doesnt cause problems or such like that security check jpg used, cuz it doesnt cause problems when people use different mdls, and no matter whatever model people use it wont be visible either way cuz its set to have 100% transparency by the server
On the topic of new DM and a DM player. I would love to see the eyes 100% invisible and a way to prevent mdl hack.
The reason being is right now on dm3 quad and pent are the 2 sought after power ups because they can turn the tide of the game. Imagine now that we throw in ring as well. The ability to be 100% invisible would allow a team to essentially regain control.
Furthermore, it'd require more strategy as now in a 4v4 you'd have to split your team every 5 min to get ring and pent. And a team can decide all 4 at pent or all 4 at ring or 2 at each.
Lots of planning and strategy. I'd love to see it.
Well I was gonna suggest an eval_alpha for proquake.
CAx uses .alpha for dead bodies when they sink into the ground they are also supposed to fade to dust, but proquake doesnt support .alpha from the progs.dat.

I wanted to fish for different thoughts, the R00k/Splitterface opinion is still vulnerable to client-side hacks (client must honor the alpha value). Wanted to see if the Mindzy IHOC opinion got traction.
(I was in an IHOC clan with Mindzy so I knew about the nails thing, but I could see lamers hacking the naiils model like the red nails cheat or just flat out making it a nails model ... I mean on DM6 who is ever using the nail gun??? --- and the fact the nail gun + SNG are shitty weapons unless you have quad).

I'm absolutely certain people do it. If it's client-side, if it's exploitable, then it's been exploited. You can bet that a skin that's all palette index 245 or something has also been used.
Ultimately, and with the renderer code being open, the only reasonable option is something running on the server. Just not sending the invisible player entity seems the best approach.
i remember running a version of directQ that had humoungous eyes without me even changing a setting...now i cant see a guy w/ eyes if hes right in front of me at rl shooting my face (on pq 4.5)
that and spread sg shots to see the blood, how about this: a full player model with animations but is 20% opaque, BUT doesnt carry a team color. so u have to think before u shoot...
Edit: players see muzzleflash when people shoot? Even with eyes
