True art on the other hand is much different.
Shakespeare made his plays for $$$. I'm rather certain Michelangelo got paid to do most or all of his renowned painting works.

I suspect that many or even most of what are considered well-known works of art were paid.

I don't claim to know what the definition of "art" really would be and if or if not original Quake would qualify. And that conversation would be a swamp-like quagmire with no answer anyway ... but I don't think the commercial or entertain reason would be a factor.

I don't think I could bear Super Mario or Call of Duty or John Madden Football being called art, though.

/Leaves hoping didn't accidentally start a lame "what is art" conversation, which wasn't my intent. Just saying Shakespeare and others got paid.

Valid points Baker, so I'll ask: Do you believe that Quake should be viewed as "art" and thus should be experienced the way it was designed?

That's TempesT's stance. Which he is entitled to, this is just further discussion mind you.

I believe Quake was designed the way it was due to limitations of technology at that time. As soon as you could give those mappers, texture artists, coders any new and improved tech... they jump all over it pushing even better looking graphics, levels and effects.

Also, and this is important, I know Quake was designed specifically with the intention of being CHANGED! In almost every aspect! So there is no truly as it was meant to be!

That's my .02, refunds are freely accepted though

Winquake is a port of the DOS version. Winquake is still vanilla. Nothing was changed between the DOS version and Windows version. I know the game wasn't designed for high resolution, but this isn't 1996 anymore. Having the ability to raise the resolution above its default is standard for many game source ports these days.

I don't want the client to be an exact replica of the original Winquake client. If I wanted that, I would of used the Winquake client from the start. I'm just looking for a client with the basic enhancements, and can shut off additional eye candy like transparent water, shadows, and colored lightning.

I could argue that everything is art. You can't say that Quake isn't art. The Lovecraftian atmopshere and very creative monsters. What an artistic masterpiece. I don't know how you couldn't understand my art analogy. How could you know what Da Vinci would want for the Mona Lisa, as Adrian Carmack for Quake? Quake is true art. Its a masterpiece.

Mario is definitely art. One could argue that warfare is art. Even sports being art lol.

With this kind of attitude, would you give Beethoven an electric piano instead of his normal acoustic piano?

I really think both ways are freaking awesome. the hi-detail texturs/darkplaces with soft shadow is pure eye-porno. it's incredible to see just how sharp and dripping with atmosphere a game can be after 17 years with the dedication of fans. But it's just my way to eat up the vague cubey impressionistic like feel of the original style. Reminds me of a moving speed-painting made of spastic brush strokes leaving huge gaps for the imagination to try to fill in.

                They both kick ass.

I thought some more about this and it doesn't really make much sense, because art IS entertainment. You're trying to say there's a fine line between art and entertainment, that's not true at all. There is no line between them. Art IS entertainment.

Who are we to tell someone else what is and what isn't "true art". One could argue that ALL art is true.
