semi-related: A friend of mine is a comedian and an MC for open-mic comedy night at a coffee shop. As usual for most comedy shows he tells a few jokes in-between introducing comedians. I don't remember the jokes he told but the show started something like this:

Him {joke}, {joke}, {joke} and now let me introduce our first comedian ~
Me: YEAH, BRING OUT THE FIRST ONE!

That one line got more laughs then his whole opening act. However, in the spirit of telling the whole truth. The "first" comedian made me a focal point of his act and kicked my ass all the way up to the point where I warned him that I was gonna really kick his.

It was a fun night.

I have a good friend I went to college with who does stand-up as well! I help write some of his jokes - but one of our favorite comedians is Doug Stanhope.

Stanhope has a bit about the opening act, that basically coaches people to laugh on que. So Doug goes out on stage is like, "Where are all my fans at?!" and everyone cheers wildly. Then he goes, "What's my name again?"

A sold out crowd, dead silent.

Because the opening comedian basically gets you in that laughing mood, and is telling everyone how funny you are, and therefore they are going to laugh after everything you say because it's expected, even if you don't really find it funny.

I was trying to the find the YouTube clip where he talks about that but no luck. He says it better himself.
