  • What is the best Quake map editor that works on Windows 7?

I have been playing around with the recently released Trenchbroom editor but I was wondering what you think is the best editor for making Quake maps. It has to work on windows 7 obviously.

Radiant doesn't work on my PC for some reason, so that's out of the question (its not really a Quake editor anyways, but rather a editor for large numbers of games in general).

    Well?

    Did you try Netradiant?

As far as not being for Quake, cue g_b in 3... 2... 1

EDIT: I don't think you'll find two people who will "agree" on what the "best" editor is! It's all on what you can get to work and adapt to.

Name's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe it is

I downloaded it and so far its not destroying my PC like Radiant did (though I am technically using my laptop).

However, for some reason textures don't work/shop up!

There is a red warning message in the log that says

      "Texture load failed: "textures/"

I also had this problem with Radiant (during the few moments where it actually worked) and wasn't able to fix it. How do I fix this? Its driving me mad!

I downloaded the Quake 1 texture wad and put it into the q1.game/id1 folder and then restarted the editor but it changed nothing.

How do I get the editor to load the textures from the game??!?

EDIT: There is also another error that says:

Unable to find default tag file C:/Users/Sveinn/Desktop/netradiant-20120705-win32/netradiant-20120705-win32/q1.game/shadertags.xml. No tag support.

Don't know if this is something important though or if it has anything to do with the textures.

Yeah, any version of Radiant can be fuggin' retarded at initial setup! Maybe try this: Quake 1 Radiant tutorial | spawnhost

GoTo step 2. and see if that solves your texture problem. Step 3. will setup your game/engine paths.

BTW, it 'Radiant wears out your patience, try this: Quake Adapter for Worldcraft 3.3, follow the instructions on the page and you will be editing in no time! But be warned, the ".map" file it creates is not standard and basically will not work with other editors at all if you choose to switch at a later date.

Also, even though texture .wads are converted "automagically", sometimes that doesn't work. I forget if it crashed WC or not, but I just convert my .wads with Texmex manually and then put them in the texture directory. I then changed my desktop shortcut to point to just WC. Hope that makes sense.

I use Quark. I don't know why but I like it. I trried qoole and Radiant, but I feel most comfortable with Quark. For creating maps I use Quark, MilkShape 3d, and Terragen (for env map), also different converting tools.
MOD it! Start Point Remake Quake Scout's Journey Quaketastic WhiteDay Quake Terminus UQE

Ok, I got past the issue of textures not working in the editor. They do now.

However, now I suffer from another problem. For some reason the textures don't show up in the actual game even though they do in the editor!

              Any clues why?

It's a "worldspawn" issue, do this:

Select a brush(Shift + right Click) that is not an entity and click view/entity inspector (shortcut key = N).

In worldspawn in the "WAD: field" type the name of the wad.

You could also try QuArK Quake Army Knife.
The Official QuArK website - Main Page

What they said. If you're asking what I use, I use Radiant like quite a few people did until they recently all downloaded Trenchbroom (which does look really nice) to try it out.

I haven't tried Trenchbroom yet (mea culpa) which is simply due to the fact I'm busy programming at the moment (and Radiant works just peachy). The day Trenchbroom gets Hexen 2 support, though, will be the day I'm all over it.

Anything about shaders in Radiant, by the way, should go away once you install the Quake gamepack (it's Quake 3 by default which does need shaders). Watch out, there's a Darkplaces gamepack as well which is NOT for making Quake 1 maps, it uses q3 format.

I don't like Worldcraft because of the interface, but lots of people would disagree.

-> Just use what works for you
