  • Quake Touch for Android

    Hi,

I have just released a beta version of a new Quake port for Android (4.0+).

My aim is to make the best, and well supported version of Quake for Android. As you may know there are a few versions available already, but most seemed to have stopped development, or don't really work.

This is a beta release, there are many improvements yet to come, but please give it a go if your interested in this project.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...uaketouch.beta

Any feedback and constructive criticisms appreciated!

    Cheers!
    Beloko

    Nice!

Please share a copy of the source code either publically or send it archived to spirit(t)quaddicted(dt)com. Thanks!

You might want to consider using FTEQW as base as that is a highly advanced modern engine.

Do you want the current source? It's currently in full development state!

Of course the code is GPL and will also be made available when I do a full release.

As stated in the Google Play description I plan to charge a small amount for the final release (OK with GPL), unfortunately I don't have enough time to develop/maintain/support this for free

I think there is a place for a good Quake port for Android, especially with all the new Android gaming devices coming out (Ouya, GamePad etc).

If you try it out it would be great to know if it works OK on your device, I have tested on 4 devices so far - there are thousands more!

      Cheers

Very nice. Can one connect to a server with this?
i think the best use of this would be to watch demos and spectate a game online. The actual playability would be very limited. But as a way to watch others play while you are not home, yes this would be a cool thing!

Yes please, if you want I can promise not to upload it to Quaddicted until you either have non-beta releases or vanish (that last part is why I am requesting it right away).

I don't think that having the source public would reduce your possible paying audience. It would keep the spirit of free software though, so others can build upon your work just like you do with id's.

Shame about the Android 3.1 requirement.

It's currently a port of WinQuake, quite old I think. I has TCP/IP muliplayer which works on LAN, I guess it may work connecting to external server, not tried.

Yes touch screen controls are slower at first, but you improve very quickly, it's playable - but of course you will never be as controlled as will Keyboard+Mouse

OK no problem I'll send the current code tonight.
There is a hard limit on the Android version of 2.3.3, I have put the higher requirement so it's used with reasonable modern devices. I may revise this.

            Thanks,
            Beloko

              Hi,

I have done a full release of this now:

              https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...oko.quaketouch

I've put it as cheap as allowed on Google Play for now!

I am going to include in-app Quake MOD downloads, this will allow you to download, install and run mods automatically.

Does anyone have any ideas for mods which I should include?
              They must be:
              * Not huge (over 50MB)
              * License allows me to distribute (all for free)
              * Work with old GL Quake, or FTEQW
              * Playable on a touch screen
              * Good!

              Thanks!
              Beloko.

                Nice work!

I like the idea someone is trying to receive a benefit doing a project like this.

                Best luck!!!

                P.S.

Can't wait to see a video about it...

Not this version, I am adding the option to move the base directory where ever you want, so will be in the next release! (next day or so)

                      Slide mod is nice.
Thanks, just tired it and it seems to work with FTEQW, thank you for the tip!

The Zerstorer mod was a brilliant single player mod back in the day.
And slide of course, plus quake rally.
Freeze tag and team fortress for multiplayer. (I use a USB mouse)
Hmm there were a few more, the prodigy trilogy?
I recommend everyone try Zerstorer either way..
Also I sent you an email about control options.

Also could you please implement an exit button or back button quits main program?

Thanks a lot for the MOD tips, I'll add them to the list and see if they work.

Yep I'll be fixing the back button in the next release.

Not sure I received your email about controls, what was it about, did I reply?! If not, send to sup[email protected].

                            Cheers!

RQuake Coop <- might be too large. maybe implement automap download
Slide <- oh how I miss playing this

ps : there is community members who would love 2 use this for a observing games from their cellphone whilst @ work type thing. you could possibly increase your revenue by simply just implementing 100% compatibility with CRCTF/CRMOD/other team oriented mods. If you need anything or questions feel free to annoy me

pss : wow, Slide mod is sweet I'm really glad that it met the criteria. There is more than just the original zip file that contains the mod, there is I believe 1 or 2 other map packs for it, they are small though.... did you snag these as well?

psss: honestly, for a guy who doesn't own a smart phone and wont be using this,I'm pretty stoked about it haha.
