  • An old funny tiny map

Someday in 2000 I used to spend my time solving various mathematical puzzles. Some of them, including a 3-dimensional maze, I took from Leonid Mochalov's book. To make the exploration of the maze more funny, I built it as a Quake map. :-)

Then, over 4 years later, I found this map in my archives and modified it a bit, so one could play SP, coop and deathmatch. I had no idea about any architectural solutions, so the map is just 6x6x6 cube of squarish rooms and corridors with some secret places added. It is named e1m8.bsp since low gravity is needed to jump up through the floors.

Those times, in 2004, I thought the gameplay was quite challenging on hard skill, but now I'd make it yet a bit harder. However, try to complete the map on Nightmare with 100% kills and opening no secrets, that's not too easy. :-) It took me 12:45 some years ago... I still have this demo, huh :-)

So, here we are: The Maze of Murders (not quite original title, I know :-))
    http://www.primefan.ru/stuff/quake/QMaze12.txt (a short description)
    http://www.primefan.ru/stuff/quake/QMaze12.zip (download link)

To play it, copy e1m8.bsp into Quake\qmaze\maps\ directory, run Quake with a switch "-game qmaze" and type "skill #; map e1m8" at the console, where # equals to 0, 1, 2 or 3 for easy, normal, hard or nightmare skill, respectively. To run deathmatch, just choose e1m8 from the multiplayer menu, as usual.

    Hope you'll have fun,

    Andrey :-)

Shouldnt you have renamed that map to something like smallbox.bsp, set sv_gravity 400, instead of telling everyone to overwrite their e1m8 map?

Unfortunately I have no idea how to set sv_gravity on a particular map.

Do you really think that 400 would be fine there? Even with 250 you can't jump one floor up, and to jump 2 floors up you have to set sv_gravity to at most 125.

As for replacing the original e1m8.bsp - well, it's a bug there, I thought that Quake reads the map outside of pak0.pak as it does with progs.dat. So you may place the file into Quake\my_dir\maps\ and start quake with a switch "-game my_dir" :-)

Just found my 2005 Nightmare speedrun and improved it by 14 seconds to 1:13, skipping some fights. Still on a keyboard, huh :-)

        http://www.primefan.ru/stuff/quake/qm_113.zip
(recorded on Bengt Jardrup's engine v1.32)

        And there's also a 100% Nightmare demo in 6:54 (2:09 improvement over my 2005 demo): http://www.primefan.ru/stuff/quake/qm_654.zip
Same engine, same keyboard, simple route, a few mistakes... could be easily pushed under 6 minutes I think...
