Anyone have any rigging suggestions, for a worm? I've never really rigged a "snake" like thing before. Should I make it as if it were a body with only one leg? Make the middle the "pelvis" and do ik chains in both directions ("pelvis to head", "pelvis to tail")? I tried doing it from the tail to the head as if the tail were say a shoulder and the head a hand, but it really didn't work out too well.
when i think of worm movement its more like contracting and relaxing than swaying like how a snake does it, but then having it's head and body pick itself up might be hard; I've never seen a worm pick up its body only its...front nose part...thing... :F
Looks like a spline is the way to go. I tried IK's but that failed, and FK is worthless, but a spline would do the trick. I decided for the mouth, a morph target was best, as trying to do bones for the mouth proved too difficult. I'll have to rig him up with a spline tomorrow.
Sorry once again this is taking so damn long. Worm's may be easy to model, but not quite so easy to animate. I'm not gonna abandon this project anytime soon, it will get done, but you'll have to be patient with my slow progress. I'm in the process of getting married, so things are backed up. Got my taxes done though!
My initial tests with a path spline seemed to be ok. I think for his crawling, I'll have to use a spline, but for his attacking and hurting damage I can go with normal IK. Now if I can just get to the computer at home before my other apartment mate does ...
I want him to be mostly subterannean with only his spikes sticking up out of the floor. He slithers along to walk.
When he sees the player, he dives up and out of the ground at the player (like the fiend). If he's up close to the player he'll just pop up and snap at him and then pull back into the ground to pursue again.
He's only vulnerable when his head is out of the dirt. When he dies his head flips back for a second and then he falls forward (with half his body in the ground still).
Sounds completely do-able. You could "cheat" to make him go underground by making the model go lower. Then that way he goes underground still - to make him non-killable when underground you just basically add in a command to make him not take damage (see Shubby and Chthon's code for this) when he's in the underground animation, then make him take damage when out of ground.
Hey guys. Man, I'm so sorry I announced this project before I actually had anything done. Since I started this well ... :
My then fiancee' got in a car accident and we purchased a new car
I got a freelance graphic designer position (which the project should be finished by the 15th)
We evicted my sister (who wouldn't do chores or pay rent) and she took her computer with her
We got a new computer
I got married
my wife lost her job
my jeep broke down for a long stretch (after a replacing the radiator, the hoses, flushing the coolant system, and replacing the water pump (TWICE) I think she's finally not leaking anymore)
and tomorrow my wife's got an interview
So I know you all love excuses, but I hate just up and abandoning a project without telling anyone. But don't think its abandoned completely, I once had a wolf3d mod that had been abandoned for nearly 5 years. Guess what, it was actually finished a few months ago.
Now, I don't see this project coming back to life anytime this year, but next year who knows?
