    Map Name: Rubicondom aka SM82
    Year Made: 2005
Authors: NotoriousRay, RPG, PuLSaR, Zwiffle, distrans
    Review Link: Underworld Reviews

    Download: sm82.zip at PlanetQuake

Lately, it seems like a lot of different people have been talking about SM82. It seems to come up quite frequently in conversations.

SM82 was apparently a map assembled from 5 different maps. To me, this is one the best base maps of all time.

Unlike some of the others maps that have been summarized in this section, there isn't really a distinguishing feature of SM82 to point out.

That being said, there is something very unique about SM82 that is difficult to put into words. I liked the structures in the map, it has a lot of character.

As you progress thru the map, you get a sense of accomplishment as you will reach 5 separate terminals which will tell you the name of the author for each separate map section. It feels like reaching checkpoints.

    Footnotes:

    1. Yes, I included the author names finally. 2 weeks ago someone registered specifically to voice a complaint that I didn't mention the author's name in a recap and that wasn't the only one. I wanted to keep it basic and only do map name, year, and review link to encourage visits to the map review sites, etc. But I guess I'll include the author's name now, even though those were always 1 click away. I feel like I'm "copying" everything from the review site now, which is what I was trying to avoid before by not including all information.

    2. Yes, that distrans. And, btw, that map has been fixed on quake.intertex.net:26002 and is now the correct version :d

    3. Oddly enough, SM82.zip seems to not be present at leveldesign.org downloads or quaddicted?!??

    4. About 8 months ago, when spawnpoint.org --- the predecessor to leveldesign.org --- had the domain expire and it was taken. I actually started a thread about this map not being available on Func_Msgboard. I had accidentally deleted it and couldn't download it again! How many maps are good enough that not being able to download it would prompt someone to start a thread? It is an oustanding map.

    5. The map name Rubicondom is a play on words of the map Rubicon, by Metlslime (aka John Fitzgibbons) who runs Func_Msgboard and is the author of FitzQuake. Rubicon is the map that has a secret map named Eagle1 which was discussed last week.

    6. In the Eagle1 post, the readme for Rubicon did say it was his final map for Quake. The readme and map were from February 1998. As distrans points out ..

    7. This is already way too many footnotes!

      You forgot sm36
      16:03:04 <gb> when I put in a sng, I think I might need nails
16:03:30 <gb> the fact that only playtesting tells me that probably means that my mind is a sieve

I think JohnXmas was doing screenshots/review links/discussing maps that haven't been discussed lately. Yeah sm36 is certainly a good map and it was a speed chain map too.

I don't bother with SP maps because it's too much downloading. If someone made an EZ installer or a zip file or 7-zip with all the maps in it i'd get them.

imho it is very stupid to download a huge package of maps just to find that 99% are crap. Why not just pick the ones that Baker recommends so nicely?

There is a lot of truth to what both you two are saying.

                1. An installer of "select" single player maps (where the readme.txt for the map is liberal and permissive, a few maps like Kinn Marcher say to not do that) is a good idea.

Eventually I think this will happen, but truth be told I have a better idea on the implementation than even that.

The level of Quake literacy of a lot of players is much lower than is perceived (and there is nothing wrong with that -- games should be easy!)

Furthermore, ironically FOQ-A's reasoning is why I hadn't played single player maps in the past. If it is just a single mymap.bsp = no problem, but some of the maps have complicated installation and it is so inconsistent from map to map. Some require +map whatever in the command line, and others are "interesting".

Nehahra's zip download comes to mind, check out the structure on that one and imagine how many zip file n00bs might screw that one up.

                2. Of all the single player maps made for Quake, most are not worth the time. There must be at least 2000 in Spirits archives, if not far more.

But no one is going to play that many maps! So you want to only play good maps! So that's why you go to http://underworld.planetquake.gamespy.com/ or http://retroquake.planetquake.gamespy.com to see what a reviewer says, for instance, or what someone who knows a lot about single player maps recommends.

                3. While I have been doing most of these, anyone is free to do them. Sometime Solecord, Yellow and I need to make a site FAQ.

Anyone is free to post whatever they like or to promote even their own work/announce what they have made, and it is impossible to do too much of that. That is one of the goals of this site.

I like hearing the opinion of others because although I have learned much about single player maps in merely a year, I value other's opinions of good maps far more than my own. I haven't even played Quoth yet, other than a quick test.

They're more puzzle and adventure games than shooters on my shelves.
Exploration and progression is an important part of a game for me. This explains partly my interest for SP Quake.
Shooting to stay alive and kill, sure, but also to break through the next place, find keys, open doors, get a well hidden weapon to make it...
SP is a lot of curiosity and patience, but rewards are great: gorgeous environments, incredible architecture for more immersive experience.
What a view from Marcher Fortress bell tower!... To make your way up there, through intense combats... This raises my blood pressure!
I like to remember those locations as places in real world.

OK. It's a matter of taste.
When Riven came out, I locked myself in a flat, shutters down with water and food, to beat the game in a single rush of five days. Sleep and dump included.
Installation of SP maps and mods can be tricky, but hey! it's just another -easy- puzzle!

Btw, some DM maps are really worth the look! For instance, I can easily load Chris "Drannerz" Dransfield's Dranzdm8 - Teardrop or Pingu's A2 - Return to Atlantis and wander in alone...

For the curious, just download Gemein's gemch01 (FileFront link) ...
This is an experimental map that I set out to make. I decided to recreate a picture of the church (from somewhere? in Canada...)
Beware though: weapons are not implemented and there's even no gameplay at all!

That is an excellent DM map. It's in the Bomber map pack and also running on Intertex:26002 which are the same set of maps.

That is a hint towards RPGSP1 "Penile Devastation" (sm82 was assembled by RPG I think) which contains a GIANT PENIS secret, and this became a running joke. In SM32 there is a placque that says, "No penises were harmed in making this" in the section that RPG made. Notice the map is called "Shut up RPG." It's in some other places, too.
