  • Marcher Fortress Rating Downgrade

I saw that the UnderworldFan site revised the rating of Marcher Fortress from a 20/20 to a 19/20.

In additional news, after some deliberation and re-playing, I have re-scored the following maps:

Marcher Fortress by Kinn: from 20 to 19.
I wonder why it got retroactively downgraded from a 20/20 to a 19/20.

Last year, about the only map you heard about was "Marcher Fortress", "Marcher Fortress", "Marcher Fortress".

It is a huge map and it is an outstanding design and had to be a collosal amount of work. But, to me, it was not the best map I've ever played. It wasn't even in my top 10 or top 20.

I think it is certainly one of the top 5 maps from an achievement standpoint, but as I was playing the map I got bored with it. Eventually several months later I decided to "god mode" it just to see the rest.

I don't really care about the rating of the map per se, it could have been rated 20/20 and still be an accurate rating in the sense that the size of the map was a 22/20 and the game play was 18/20. I just didn't think it was the best ever made, there were a lot of maps I liked a lot more.

(I think maps that are too massive can ruin things by virtually requiring "cheating" ... I don't see how a normal player could have dealt with the end sequence which had endless badass monsters. That's another thing that bothered me when I finally finished the map.)
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

That map isn't so great to me either. Way too laggy, and as baker said gameplay not too good. Architecture however is outstanding.

For me i never could be bothered with singleplay.. just becouse i love multiplay (dm) so much i thought it was a waste of time.. However i am intrested in new maps and the architecture so for me the monsters are purely a matter of 'having-somethnig-to-shoot-at-while-checking-out-the-map', and in that sense i think marcher fortress is just great! lately i've been playing quite a lot of coop on the mod rocketguy made (topjob btw) and i think it would be very cool if this map could be made to run on the coopserver. (thats probably never gonna happen tho due to the huge amount of monsters and size of the map etc.. but still would be great fun to battle thru it with a couple of mates )

        Hi Baker!
I can tell you the answer.
It is because of the gameplay, as you said. I played it again and realized sometimes the gameplay (especially the ending) is slightly repetitive and unimaginative.

        So i re-scored it:
        =>
        Architecture 10/10
        Gameplay 9/10

        total 19.

In my opinion, it is a worthy 19/20 map, but it is not perfect.
Also i agree with you baker that there are some other maps that are better than marcher fortress. Just to mention two for example, in my opinion emptiness without and gmsp3 are better maps.

marcher would probably place around no. 20 in my "top Q1SP ever" rankings.
