Texture Problem

ok. i know how to create a .wad with qART, how to change textures, etc. etc.
But when I insert my textures into a map, the place where my tex should be is pink and black checkered.
I have tried everything I can think of, and still it won't work. Also, if I try my own sky tex, quake shells me out to DOS, with a "bad surface extends" error (or something like that).
Anyone know what that means? I sure can't figger it out. Also, I use QBSP, not Worldcraft. So don't tell me how to do it with Worldcraft, cuz i still won't be able to do it!
