Damn you Firefox and even more so you, Google, MSN.
I have given in. As you might have known, the map descriptions were pure XML rendered through XSL in your browser. Well, the first annoyance with Firefox’s incomplete XSLT support, but I worked around it (with Javascript, yuck). The much bigger issue is that most search engines did not index those XML files for some reason. Just try Google or MSN/Bing. Yahoo is the great exception, I like Yahoo.
So I just decided to go back to HTML. The spmaps.html now links to the new files. Hey, no need for Javascript or the comment IFrame on the description pages any more. That’s nice. Nothing should be broken, but please shout if.
The XML files will stay, the only difference with them (if you use a better browser than Firefox) is that the comments are all black. Won’t fix that.
In the end it’s more convenient for you, a bit more work for me and hopefully a somewhat fair representation in the popular search engines some day.
New poll: Do you own a legit copy of Quake?
When I added some info about how to buy Quake to the Quake Wiki some days ago, a question manifested in my brain: How many of you actually own a legit copy of Quake?
I myself have 5 copies of Quake… Did you expect anything less? Two original big boxes (german text though), one big box for Mac, Quake: The Offering for Linux and Ultimate Quake (includes 1-3). Except Ultimate Quake those all come from Ebay. Ultimate Quake was a different story: Back in ~2001 I really wanted to have a legit copy of Quake but there were two obstacles. First of all my parents must not know. Secondly Quake is banned (from being sold to minors or publically) in Germany so one had to order from a foreign country. The country of choice was Austria and a good friend with *COOL* parents got it for me. As this was the beginning of the downfall, maybe my parents had the right intentions after all. ;-)
So, see the poll on the left and leave your vote. If you are a loonie like me, please mention how many copies you have. I sincerely hope that someone else will claim the title of QCOotAU (Quake Copy Owner of the Arcane Underworld).
Update: Added “No, I lost mine. ;(((” option for loosers and souls crushed by terrible traumatic incidents.
Random Mini Update
The old logo is back!
I repacked some files, you’ll notice if you bump into one. The originals reside in http://www.quaddicted.com/filebase/trash/(filenamehere) .
Please comment more on maps, criticise ratings, mention errors etc. I tried to make some “recent comments on maps” thing for the sidebar earlier but unfortunately did not succeed.
Yes, I will add the last releases to the listing now. Unbelievable how I never do that right away, huh?
Possible domain hiccup later
I will be moving the domain quaddicted.com to a different registrar. This means that there will be a short time where the site is not reachable and possibly a long time while I figure out how to make it work. Wish me luck!
Update: Wow, that was flawless. I even did setup the stuff for emails correctly (or so it seems). Huzzah!
The new Quaddicted.com
Visit Quaddicted.com (link edited at April 2nd) today to see the new site. It is kinda blurry, blame Inkscape and 5 seconds lag for each edit. I hope you like it. :)
That mysterious .mkv file is a video: H264 with MP3 in a Mastroka container if I recall correctly. If you can’t watch it, install mplayer, VLC or Media Player Classic & ffdshow (tell it to decode H264) & Haali Media Splitter. You can’t say I am not promoting good software.
Many thanks to NahkahiiR for that “speedrun”! The map is sm125_negke by the way.
The Coagula pack has been delayed a few days.
