More changes behind the curtains
With help from megaman I changed the structure of the xmls a bit. This means I fiddled around with them a lot. I am fairly sure that I did a good job but if you notice something missing or wrong please do report it as soon as possible.
And I linked the author field to the fancy spmaps.html filter. It does not work with whitespace yet (eg “Shaun [Kona] Ross”) but I am sure I can fix that.
PS: Expect something amazing “when it’s done”.
Update and linkable spmaps filter
I added the latest maps to the descriptions. And I made the javascript filter thing linkable. So if you have a view filter that you want to share (let’s say “2004 excellent”) make sure the cursor is in the form and hit the Enter key. Then copy the url of the site, in this example http://www.quaddicted.com/spmaps.html?filtered=2004+excellent. Great huh? This is for negke.
This is even slower than before now, stupid Javascript hackery. The filter only applies after the whole page is loaded (that’s the price for doing it on your computer instead on the server). And stupid me for scripting in such a bad way. If someone wants to improve it, eternal love is assured.
Some changes in the background
a) I noticed that the script I used for the Engines, Tools and Wads Archives listings was “slightly” outdated. So I updated it and also fixed the file filters. There are many more files shown now, especially engines.
b) I changed the urls for the news posts to fancy-shmancy ones. That will probably give search engines tickly feelings when crawling. If you notice anything being broken, please tell me. I do need to find a way to make the map descriptions themselves more known though. Only Yahoo has decent results. Apparently using XML/XSLT was a very bad idea when it comes to search engines…
c) Not many will know, but I’ve been hosting files for the now long-abandoned Q1C (Quake 1 Complete) project for several years. Some german guys packaged a couple of maps, mods, engines etc with .bat files for an easy-to-use glittery “eye-candy” thing. The reason why I am mentioning this is that I will delete the files next week. If you want to grab them: q1c/Q1C_R1.zip (700 Megabytes) and q1c/Q1C_R2.zip (210 Megabytes). Unless you are a obsessive collector, you won’t have any need for this. Hey, I won’t keep them, isn’t that a sign for being on the mend?
x) Is any KDE user visiting this site? Could you tell me if Konqueror renders the map description pages correctly (like this) or does it just display the plain text? Cheers.
y) The FOV poll is idiotic as metlslime pointed out. I don’t have a good idea for a new one at the moment, shout if you do.
z) Yes, I have to update both the maps and the speedmapping listings… Motivate me!
Your favourite map(s) in 2008!
And the people’s favourite map in 2008 iiiiiiissssssssssssssssssssss …………. two maps actually:
Distrans’ Ruined Nation and Trinca’s The Tomb of Chak Toh Ich`ak are the happy couple. necros’ The Living End & Elder World Waystation and newcomer Simulacrum’s The Katagean Redoubt are runner-ups. Congratulations!
Now for the rest of the field, remember that this poll asked about the #1, not for a ranking of them all. So a low (or even lowest) position does not mean anything bad at all. :-)
Take a look at last year’s poll. And then on this year’s. Notice how this year the votes are very evenly distributed? I guess that shows how awesome 2008 was, such high level of work. Thank you mappers!
Filtering the maps as you type
I just added a fancy javascript to the singleplayer map listing. Javascript is something I consider generally dangerous and not to be used actively by me, but this filter was just too handy to not implement it.
It filters in the visitor’s browser, which means it is fast and does not rely on the site (you can just save the page and use it offline). Also it is a special feature and not needed for the site to be useful (thus people with Javascript disabled can use the site).
If some of you think this is terrible and I should remove it, please speak up. Everyone else: Have fun!
