Take a look at id software. They trusted people to pay for the game, even after giving the entire engine away with a full 1/3 of the levels in DOOM. Then they did the same again in Quake. Now devs/publishers hardly even do demos, and often they pull demos using every legality they can, to force it off the internet whenever the game's sales flop. That way people can't tell that it's a crap game and not buy it. This sort of thing promotes piracy.
The entire RTS genre for instance, has stagnated, not just because they daren't take risks with new ideas, but because the fans are rabid and don't like change. If you buy a game, just to see what it's like, or buy it just because it's a sequel, then you get the mediocrity that you deserve. Well that's my opinion anyway.
There are plenty of good games still being made. In fact, I would argue there are more good games being made now than back in the days of Win95. But people need to lower their graphical expectations, as all the risk is being taken on by smaller developers and published in places like steam.
Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Company of Heroes 2, Age of Wonders 3, Sim City, Bioshock Infinite, all crap with nothing new and with regressive mechanics. I don't have my hopes up at all. I'm enjoying older games that I couldn't afford as a child, or that I missed. This way you won't be disappointed. If a great game does come out, it'll be an exciting surprise. This is the stoic way of life, and it brings ceaseless joy
