No doubt, but I have 2 computers. 1 for internet and 1 that is banned from even having a cable/wire that insinuates an internet connection plugged into it. For the latter, 98 would be legit.

I kept using Win 98 all the way until 2006. I needed to install some software and XP was required. I thought crap, nothing beats my Win98 setup... WRONG! My XP was faster in all aspects, booting especially!!!
Then in 2010 I built the computer I now use just because... well, I was bored and hadn't done it in awhile. It had Win 7 solo for about two years and seldom was used. Then a friend had probs with his computer and I fixed it for him, but made sure he had a dual boot option with Linux Mint as a backup. While researching Linux for him I found a distro I liked and so, the seldom used computer found it's "purpose" in life
Today I have it as a dual boot setup with PinguyOS and Win 7(on a ssd). I mostly use PinguyOS though.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I liked all three of those Win OS's(98se, XP and 7) Win2K was too utilitarian for me and Vista was bagged on so hard I had no interests.
There was no mulitiple choice so that's why I typed all this out! FOKKKK, my life sucks, heheheName's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe it is

seven!
loved XP most before i got 7. they took the good from both XP and the few good things from vista,
put those togehter and made the whole 20% cooler.
so i vote 7, imo best OS from microsoft yet.
although i guess i might as well say XP, cuz most of the good things from 7 come from XP
also yay for compatibility mode whicha ctually does anything, the compatibility mode in xp 99% of the time seemed to do absolutely nothing for games or programs which needed it.are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
> then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

W7 is really a great success compare to Vista and since I'm on it my system froze like 2 times (+2 years)... but I'm on W7 Tiny eXPerience.
I was on W98 for a very long time and in the last years it was running in a 256MB of RAM so imagine how fast it was (reboot time was 7 seconds).
I miss W98 and still have plans to use it in a Virtual Box or something.
W7 will win this survey e.a.s.y.

I've used every single OS mentioned in this thread so far and I'd have to say if you're still using XP you should seriously consider upgrading to at least Windows 7.
XP is WAAAAAAY to easy to hack into.
Windows 95
HAH why are you still running this? Maybe if your PC isn't connected to the internet at all. Windows 95 is basically where Microsoft started it's venture into the GUI of OS. This must be your souped up 486 with turbo that you play SP Quake ONLY on right?
Windows 98
This is essentially Windows 95 with service packs honestly.
While Win98 still had huge security holes and isn't recommended anymore for a modern day OS.
Windows XP
Initially i protested WinXP and vowed to stick to my Win98 guns but at a time of great despair (mandatory format) My Win98 OS install disk was lost after I moved states.
Windows 7
This is where (I think) most everyone should be on their production PC. If it's connected to the net and you're not a power user I suggest you use this version of Windows. This is a good example of what happens after MS gets enough time to fine tune their OS I feel.
Windows 8
WTF? Why!?
I'm currently stuck with Windows 8 on my Laptop and the whole touchscreen enabled OS on my non-touch-screen enabled laptop really makes me ponder "Why the heck did they install a touch-aware OS on a non-touch aware laptop? Makes no sense why.
---
Once you find out where the Desktop is on windows 8 you gain some familiarity from Windows 7 back but get this, WINDOWS 8 HAS NO START BUTTON.I paid $3 for a program called "StartIsBack" of something that mimics the start button of Windows 7/Vista/XP and now My Windows 8 functions more like Windows 7 which makes me happy.
Windows 7 should still be a standard on all NON-TOUCH-ENABLED-PC's.
Windows 8 seems like it's trying to count their eggs before they hatch with the amount of change Windows 8 brings over Windows 7.
Just my opinion from a person w ho's used every single MS OS starting with DOS.
If you pay attention to this type of stuff then you probably know that Linux (specifically Ubuntu linux) is making huge advancements on becoming a "regular user's OS" which I highly recommend for anyone wanting to try something fresh, new and free, also you don't have to worry about viruses like you do in MS Windows.
Vista is essentially what XP should have been.
Windows 7 is the current sweet spot and I have to say at first i didn't like the changes as a power user coming from XP, it felt like they hid a lot of the options I was use to messing with as I traversed the XP interface. Win7 still has a huge variety of settings but they're ?optimized? Honestly I prefer XP's look but Win7's functionality and security.
Even though I use windows 8 I recommend Windows 7 to all.Last edited by Phenom; 04-21-2013, 02:07 PM.

Haven't checked 8. Happy with 7.
Don't understand people seem nostalgic for 95/98, those were incredibly unstable and BSOD hell in my experience. At least NT and 2000 had a stable kernel, though not suitable for gaming. With XP SP2 Ms finally had a decent mainstream OS, although it was filled with security holes. UAC in 7 fixes most blatant issues though.

Windows 2000 was probably the most stable OS that microsoft ever built in my opinion, when it came to gaming, especially back then, i stuck to win98. Of course im like you phenom, i've used all the OS, including my short stint on windows ME which was just horrid, i uninstalled it after about 2 month's of messing with it and reinstalled 98. vista was ok, XP got better, windows 7 is stable and windows 8, well, ive had it for over a month and have had NO, and i mean NOOOOOOOO issue's what so ever with it. So give me more time and i may just think windows 8 may be very stable

Sometimes I'll drop into Win8's Metro start screen for fun but only for a moment since I can't stand the feeling that I'm using an over-sized Windows phone.
Mainly the only reason I'm sticking with Microsoft at all (Here comes a weak excuse!) is for the programs like Adobe photoshop and uh.... Adobe photoshop... I could use GIMP and cut the chain of bondage to MS but ever since Win7 came out I don't feel like my cd-rom tray is about to pop open or my screen resolution is going to drop to 640x480 unexpectedly (bitchslap anyone?).
It was fun but I don't have time anymore to just fvxk with people like that anymore
It finally feels that Ms finally is doing something right with Win7 and I'm starting to lose my hatred from so many years of unneeded formatting and BSODs.
I've seen the BSOD in Win7 once I believe? It was a while ago and not my PC I was working on though... and have yet to see the BSOD in Windows 8. In the earlier versions Microsoft had me basically debugging the BSOD error messages I had them so much!

Windows 7 is crazy fn stable. The only way I can BSOD Win7 is when I'm running [email protected] and hammering cpu endlessly @ 100% usage w/ a high ass overclock. That don't count though, thats clearly operating out of spec & out of normal levels of every day usage, even during heavy cpu loads in gaming its fluxuating from 90-100%.
I know for a fact Microsoft got their shit together with Windows 7, and I forsee me being just as stubborn when I was using Windows 2000 professional I totally ignored Windows XP until 2kpro's recieved its last update and eventually I was forced into a upgrade to XP, I then was comfortable with XP all the way entirely through Windows Vista lifespan,,,, I was relunctant as shit to install Windows 7 but I can not imagine ever using Windows XP again, and I feel sorry for anyone still using it.Want to get into playing Quake again? Anyone still using anything earlier then Microsoft Windows7 should watch this video, even if you do run Windows 7 or even Linux. This shows you how dummy proof hacking has become. You can literally take over whole networks in minutes.
Go ahead and watch the YouTube video below, It's only 2:32 minutes long. I'll wait.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz39iHrFGDY
Welcome back to QuakeOne.com, If you're running Win95,Win98,win98SE,win98ME or windows XP that video will demonstrate just how vulnerable you are to some punk with a wireless adapter enabled laptop and some free time.
If it's your main computer you should strongly consider upgrading to Windows 7 or the equivalent of it. Don't say we didn't warn you!Last edited by Phenom; 04-21-2013, 08:46 PM.
