  • Quake Versions, Mods, Patches and Confusions

ok guys been a while since i fired up ole quake again . I instaleld it and im running glqwcl and seems to be ok. Loaded up gamespy and sure enough there's a ton of mods and nobody seems to be running standard maps.

I also notice mods like fuhquake, qrack, joesquake bla bla bla.

I have a radeon card that appears to run GLquake fine (looks fine anyways) Although I did have to remove that darn opengl32.dll file.

I wouldn'r mind installing a mod that would inroduce cool colors and stuff but some of these are 2 years old?

A also wouldn't mind installing some packs and maps.

What is your reccomendation to me that I should install?

Depends if you want to play competitive multiplayer (QuakeWorld) or rather for fun (NetQuake).

For sure I'm using Quakeworld unless i'm playing against bots. Netquake (over the net) if I remember correctly if played on the internet was slipping and sliding all over.

Then give fquake a try, it will install everything you need for modern Quakeworld: http://f.nu/fquake/

www.quakeworld.nu is the main qw site.

Mine works right now, There just aren't alot of servers out there. What's the deal with all the different versions?? fquake, gquake yourquake, myquake etc??

Back in the day we had Quakeworld 2.30. and you either used glquake(glqwcl) for better graphics or (qwcl) for normal pixelated graphics.

I'm just confused now with all the different downloads that will keep the version clean and not install alot of garbage. I mean, Are people really concerned with Quake 1 in GL mode slowing their system down these days?

I cant imagine wanting to look at a pixelated screen in these days but I moved and now im on a modem so maybe this is hurting me?

#1. Is QW - 2.30 fine to run now, or is everyone using something else?

#2. I like nice graphics, Is everyone using standard quakeworld glquake still or is there a mod that outshines it?

#3. I love practicing with bots and 1 on 1. Is reaperbot still king?

#4. I thought I remember a "demolauncher" program from back in the day to playback demos and stuff, is this true?

#5. Do people still play netquake(where if you lag you slip all over the place) and why?

Sorry to sound nuewbie but i just need to get up to speed.

          Thanks

Lag? On cable with 40 ping?

This is 2006, not 1996. Almost no one uses a dialup modem.

Spirit did a pretty good job of helping you out.

Btw ... if you want to play QW that fQuake package is a pretty solid installation. You should be able to load everything an be off and running. It has a bots option in the download.

And the answer to your other question. In QW, everyone uses FuhQuake or EZQuake -- no one uses the ID software originals, not in NetQuake or in QuakeWorld.

I know he did, I just needed clarification. Yea well I moved and now im back on a modem account which sucks.

I remember back in the day there was quakeworld(controlled the latency) and regular quake(that had no latency protection)

Yeah, back in the day I tried QuakeWorld but I must have been using the wrong version because my map downloads kept getting stuck on 99% and players seemed to blink around. Modern QuakeWorld clients are a lot fancier than the ID originals, had those been around I might have evolved into a QW player instead of NetQuaker.

But once I got cable in 2002, playing NetQuake on the internet became a blast and I got to take revenge on a few of my LPB tormenters.

Playing regular Quake on dialup isn't the most fun at times. Sorry to hear you have dialup, man.

Yea I originally started with something called MPLAYER to connect servers with a 14.4 modem I was slipping and sliding all over the place Until QW was created.

Your right though, Playing through normal quake is the shit if you got the good connection.

ezquake is the best qw engine at the moment. for servers get ASE or just check out www.quakeservers.net (or did ezquake have a built-in browser, dunno).

Darkplaces is a client that supposedly lets you play QW servers and NQ servers. It also supports textures and models, etc.
FuhQuake is a QW client that also lets you play netquake, and it looks like teh 1337.

And by supposedly, he means does, I can connect to and successfully play on QW servers and NQ servers alike in it. And it has a QW server browser in game.

You cannot seriously suggest using Darkplaces for playing QW.

I think FOQ-A means FTEQW, which in it's present state can't connect to NetQuake servers. FTEQW is an interesting client that can connect to QuakeWorld, Quake 2 and Quake 3 servers and, according to the docs, NetQuake -- but that doesn't actually work. And I've heard that the Quake 2/Quake 3 connecting isn't very stable either.

The word is there will be a new release of FTEQW very soon, maybe they will have this fixed.

That being said, from what I've heard it doesn't do NQ very well, at least from someone who tried that maybe with an unreleased version.
