    Hi,

I would suggest that you need to give us some more information on the specifics of your problem before we can advise you in any detail. What have you tried so far, what errors did you encounter, etc

However, one of the guys who helps run this site, Baker, has produced a multitude of very supportive guides to help you get up to speed with where quake is now and how to get the most from it using the newer quake engines such as Qrack and Darkplaces. There are a number of quake installers that may assist you in tweaking your version of quake to get the best performance for your rig here along with lots of new textures to make your quake look and feel a nicer place to be.
If you're looking to play online then check out the server list on the on the frontpage of this site and type connect whateverservernameyouwant in the console and providing you have the right maps and a registered quake you should be able to connect. If you're in the states then quake.shmack.net is probably the most patronised server but there are others and in europe I would suggest euroquake and the flanders.servegame.org servers might be your first port of call

    Hope this helps

    Kind regards

    Monty

install Darkplaces and put this pk3 file into your id1 folder. Refer to my above directions for fileplacement. This pk3 file contains all the quake maps so you can play singleplayer to your hearts content. If you want the real quake look, buy the game or get the demo.

when you click on the installer, it asks where you want to put it. I think the default is C:\QUAKE_SW

http://synq.quakedev.com/synq-alpha-007.7z <--- the full game legal
                          http://files.filefront.com/Quake+Dem.../fileinfo.html <--- the demo
                          http://offload1.icculus.org/twilight...ly20070928.zip <--- Darkplaces Quake Engine

If you want to get synq working, use the darkplaces engine and put the synq pak files in the id1 folder. My bad I thought it was a pk3 but it's 2 pak files.

you should have a setup like this:

                          ..\darkplaces.exe
                          ..\id1\pak0.pak
                          ..\id1\pak1.pak

I'm taking a guess that you don't know what a 7z file is. Download 7zip and extract the files from there into your id1 folder.

                            http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z442.exe <--- 7zip
