It's probably overwriting the pak0.pak and some config files that were provided by the demo. I'd say replace them since you can redownload the demo any time you want.

you will probably want to use a better quake engine as some of the ones provided by id software don't work on xp.
try these:

basically all u need from id is the pak0.pak and pak1.pak which need to be in ur \whatever\id1\ folder.. then u can use any engine u like.. unzip engine in to the \whatever folder.. ( \whatever being the folder u installed quake in.. probably "c:\quake" )
pak0.pak comes with the demo-version of quake (shareware) and pak1.pak is the bit that u would need to buy..)Last edited by Solecord; 11-21-2007, 01:26 PM.

YesOriginally posted by quakelover View Postso if i were to buy the game i would just download one of those engines and then extract the files into the quake folder like i did with the demo?
edit:
As Peg described above, this is the basic quake setup:
./quakeenginehere
./id1/pak0.pak
./id1/pak1.pak
This is as simple as it gets

Instead of overcomplicated and misleading stuff like Synq, wouldn't it be better to just provide a zip file with the demo pak0.pak, the demo license, and something like Proquake/GL?
Or would there be a legal problem with that?
If so, why not make a "Shareware EZ-installer" that connects to the internet, fetches the demo, extracts pak0.pak, and installs it along with Proquake, and puts a Quake icon on the Windows desktop?
Under Linux, it would be as simple as a f****** Bash script... Windows, OK that might be more difficult...
All these problems could be avoided...
what we just saw here, is that all the ezinstallers and Synq failed to help this guy play Quake...
In regard to "WAAAH it only lets me play episode 1" I can just say, IT SAYS RIGHT IN THE GAME THAT YOU NEED THE REGISTERED VERSION so how retarded can you get...?
