  • Newbie - Please Help!!

    Hi All

Ok, first off I am 40 years of age and got into Quake when it first came out, absolutely loved it!
Since getting a windows XP computer, I have been unable to run it, until today that is

    I downloaded http://www.quakeone.com/proquake/pro...80124_2147.zip
and the game runs perfectly, brilliant

Question is, can I play on line, multiplayer style as I'd love to be able to join and start games as I did years back with my pals dotted all over the country.

    Any help will be great

    Thanks!
    Lee

    Hi Lee,

    Welcome back.
There are still a fair number of multiplayer servers online and, providing you have the full registered version of Quake you should be able to connect. Shmack, Rage, Speaknow and bomber are probably the most popular in the states whereas the 3 flanders servers and Bigfoot are almost certainly the top european ones. You should be able to find the details of the server addresses on the servers page of this site and to connect simply run quake > go in to console by hitting the tilde key ("~") > type
    Code:
    connect flanders.servegame.org:26000
    > you should now be in the game and trying to avoid Polarite like the rest of us .

If you like your eye candy in game and your hardware can support it you might also consider one of the new Quake engines such as Qrack, Darkplaces or JoeQuake.

To keep the game fresh and interesting many of the servers run custom maps in addition to the original ones included in the game. Quaddicted has a large archive of maps and this site also provides lots of map packs for relevant servers (see servers list on front page).

    I hope this helps

    Kind regards

    Monty

      Hi Monty

      Thanks for the warm welcome
I tried following your instructions but it looks like I have a shareware version How do I get the full version, is it downloadable anywhere?

Also, when I used to paly on line that was through good old dial up, what settings do I need to use my ethernet broadband connection?

Thanks, can't wait to get up and running!

Try another server like: quake.shmack.net or rage.quakeone.com

Using port 26000 (default) of course!

Great, shmack worked! Thanks, I forgot how crazy it was on line, and now that the connection is so quick that old lag problem seems to have gone now.

One more question, well two actually-
Can my friend run Quake 1 on windows vista?
How do I get mates to join my multiplayer game, how do they find me?

                    Big thanks

there are 2 reasons why you could not connect to flanders..

first you set port 2600 when you should have set port 26000

second.. this is not your fault ().. flanders servers seem to be down atm.

Yes it should be possible. If they do run in to problems this link may help.

                            Big thanks
If you are on a well known multiplayer server such as Shmack, Flanders or Bigfoot(Euroquake) then the servers are listed on this site on the first page towards the top right corner . If you give the page a few seconds to fully load and then hover over the relevant server name you should see a popup with the names of the players that are currently on that server. They could find you that way. There are other options such as the very useful server browser in the Qrack engine or 3rd party applications, all seeing eye and gamespy spring to mind as apps I've heard of in the past, that you can run that regularly check the servers. Or did you mean that you were intending to run a server yourself and have your mates join you there?

                            Kind regards

                            Monty

Yes thats exactly what I was trying to say. If I go Multiplayer - start a game - does that mean I am the server? If so how does anyone find me to join my game?

You've all been very helpful so far, many many thanks
