You could try here for a list of fairly standard commands.

Please bear in mind that there are some deviations from these if you're using one of the more modern Quake engines. Qrack is quite helpful in as much as if your type the first letter of what you think the command is and press tab it will display a list of possible commands. If you type more letters the list gets filtered accordingly.

        Hope this help

How do I use these more modern engines such as qrack? (where do I get it and is it just a case of installing into my Quake folder?)

I am currently launching the game via wqpro399.exe is that a new engine?
          Sorry if I'm sounding dumb

try glpro399.exe. that will allow you to take advantage of your 3D graphics card. And yes, wqpro399/glpro399 is a new engine; it is the engine that is most faithful to the original winquake and glquake. It hasn't added any new graphical features or lighting, just things to help make setup more convenient for the end user.

Qrack, on the other hand has added the ability to use 24 bit textures, skins, console fonts, menu items, etc. It does a great job of giving you some eyecandy on an old game. I personally use Qrack, however, I keep the actual in-game textures original, and just use 24 bit fonts, HUD items, and menu items so that it's easier for me to read. HUD items are the graphics that you would see at the bottom of your screen that tell you how much health, armor, ammo you have and shows that image of the quake ranger's face.

You can get QRack from here and although you're on the right lines this guide from the Author may help you get the most from it.

No problem matey wqpro399 is an update on the original proquake coded by one of the Site Admins here, and a tremendously helpful guy named Baker. It is new, and very true to the original in look and feel but with lots of bugs irined out and new features added. Qrack and Darkplaces are also new engines but have a more individual feel as you will see when you try them. If you are a Quake purist then I would suggest you stick with Proquake but if you like your eye candy try Qrack.

              I hoep this helps

Phew, ok, I have extracted the qrack.zip file to my Quake directory and have created a shortcut to the glQrack.exe and have modified the target line as instructed. Problem is I get an error message saying "glide2x.dll is missing". I get the same message if I use the straight unmodified glQrack.exe

                So I guess I need glide2x.dll?

Ok, just installed glide to my windows system folder (good old google) but now I have this message

                  "Invalid OpenGL version update drivers!!"

Doh, ok just fixed the above problem and Qrack is working!!!

I had opengl32.dll in my quake folder and it didn't like it?? Anyway, cut the file to the desktop and hey presto qrack is running

Now, if my pals are not running qrack, can we still be in the same game?

                    Thanks guys, you are stars!!

This is a perfect example of why error messages matter.

In ProQuake 3.99r, it will simply say you should rename or delete opengl32.dll in the Quake folder. I may expand upon this and have it offer to open the Quake folder with opengl32.dll highlighted.

But in the above case, delmastiff gets a "glide2x.dll is missing" which prompts him to think ...

And then he goes to Google to get something he doesn't need and that won't solve the problem.

                      Do proper error messages matter?

Is delmastiff the only one that has ever done this?

New users can't be expected to know the solutions to these things. User-friendliness coded into the clients is the only way.

My understanding is that the OpenGl32.dll is now more an 'historical' feature than anything else. If Quake doesn't run try renaming it and try again.

Re: Qrack: Although I've not tested this out myself, as I used to mainly run dedicated servers such as SPC, Q1 and more recently DAMAGE using the earlier version of proquake coupled with the CRMod or DMP [initially intended to give you some more admin capabilities and a little extra functionality], it's my understanding that you should be able to do this with Qrack. I'm sure R00k, the designer of Qrack, will probably jump in at this point to confirm/deny this, but it should work AFAIK.

If you have a spare machine lying, doesn't need to be particularly high spec'd, around you might consider using that as your dedicated server, and then you and your mates connect to that.
