Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

@Paradise - I wouldn't disagree with any of that, but the single most important thing is that when you buy ATI you get a card that may be technically superior, and may be extremely good at Direct 3D, but is incredibly poor at OpenGL. For rock solid conformant and compliant OpenGL with no issues, ATI - I'm afraid - comes in last place.IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

Dudey, lol, I love you but for the sake of this great card I am telling you: all recent and past games right now are GL - and the graphics mode I play them in - and I had NO ISSUES with them. I do not know what else to tell you other than it is a shame you gave up on a great and colorful graphics card based on old happenings and other people's opinion of it. This is my first hand account of it that it is grrreat!
You are an engine programmer therefore you know more than me. ATI is a great product into which I have great faith into. D3D is not used anymore, everything is GL based now. D3D had stopped being used since HL1 came out - it did have a D3D alternative - and that was 1998, that is just one example, UT is another. A lot of things have changed since then.
Take care.Last edited by Paradise; 05-11-2008, 04:06 PM.

Direct3D is the Microsoft 3D graphics API, OpenGL is a platform independent graphics API.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

All I know is that circa 1999, when you run a game, you no longer had the D3D option and everything was GL by default. Yes they are separate as you said.
That is what I based my statement on. Also D3D looks way crapier than GL and you can easily tell the difference - for me - anyways.

It's actually quite the opposite. ID games (and games based on their engines) are about the only OpenGL games left, mostly everything else is Direct 3D exclusively (you can't choose, hence no option).IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

Excerpt from Wikipedia:
The early transitory days of graphic accelerated gaming, circa 1996-1998:
"Not many DirectX applications used Direct3D's software rendering, preferring to perform their own software rendering using DirectDraw's facilities to access the display hardware."
This was exactly as I was saying, in early games, when graphic accelerators were a luxury, circa 1998, Half-Life and others had an option into the menus to run the game in DIRECT DRAW SOFTWARE MODE or GL RENDERED if you had a graphics card.
Further:
"In any case, by the time SGI had demonstrated that OpenGL software rendering performance could be competitive with that of Direct3D, software rendering was fast becoming irrelevant due to the widespread availability of inexpensive 3D graphics hardware. By 1998, even the much-maligned S3 Virge was substantially faster than the fastest Pentium II running Direct3D's MMX rasterizer."
Here is a list of the most popular games using OpenGL, therefore proving to you that OpenGL IS used for today's most popular games.

Paradise is trying to set the world record for being wrong and arguing the point digging up 10 years old information (This is 2008, not 1998.)
There are like 5 or 6 OpenGL games released in the last 2 or 3 years, versus hundreds upon hundreds of Direct3D (DirectX) games.
Which is bigger 300 or 6? Well, according to Paradise, six is the larger number.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

Quake, according to the whole point of this original discussion, IS from that time period, therefore all this information is relevant of how Quake runs within a GL environment.
As for the other newer games, the list is obviously more than 6, most prominent of those games have many sequels. And this 2nd point was a deviation from the original discussion and of lesser importance.
Point is, GL is very widespred.

How so? All your arguments fell flat. I provided straight proof from an respectable and acknowledged source.
And I do not see this as arguing but rather intelligent and mature exchange of correct information. It is not my issue that you are in self-denial of current events pertaining to this issue. Your subtle way of calling me stupid is dissapointing for the impartial Admin image you are supposed to project and also as it is bordering on flame, violating the guidelines of this section under the forum which you are administrating.
This is nothing personal, the facts on GL stand as previously proved.

Direct3D has been used by nearly every Windows game made in the last 6 or 7 years. This is common knowledge; MH pointed this out as well. It's no secret.
Instead, when this is pointed out you do several posts of nonsense and out-of-date information? WTF? And then when I critique what you said, you start with the lame and boring ad hominem attacks (admin, yada, yada, harassment, <insert broken record gigantor post here>).
Why should anyone bother to talk to you?
I can say I am beginning to see what perhaps some others see in you.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
