Sounds like you have a DOS version of the game. If so you'll need to download DOSBox from here: DOSBox, an x86 emulator with DOS, install it to a temp location using that, then copy out the PAK files to your permanent install location. I'd also advise burning the PAK files to CD so that you don't have to do it again.

I have zero experience of or knowledge of OSX so I can't provide any help or instructions on how to go about using DOSBox on a Mac.

You said that I have the DOS version of the game. What other versions are there and how might I get one? I'm kind of hoping for something a bit easier since I am not at all computer savvy.

Windows and Linux versions are also available, but might be more difficult to find. Your best option is to wait until someone who knows the steps for OSX to come along and guide you through it, really.

There is no Quake install for OS X. OS X didn't exist until 2001! And OS X isn't compatible with OS 9, the 1990s Mac operating system.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Aye, there's the rub. The only way is to grab the PAK files off another version and then use a source port.

There isn't an install... BUT THERE IS AN APP!
FreeQuake: Install and Play Quake in 5 minutes!
                More specifically:
                http://www.quakeone.com/q1files/down...106SW_DATA.sit

But you still need the pak files, or you could just stick to the demo and that one server that plays demo maps...

/me wonders whether it's legal to pirate something you own...
                I guess it's a moral question.
