  • Installing from Scracth

    Hi all.
I was feeling a bit nostalgic about the good ole days of Quake and I came across this site. However, I have been unable to find a step by step tutorial of what I need to do to install.

Is there a link for that?
I am using Windows 7 and assume Ill need to download a version of Quake 1.
After that, what else? I recall years ago when I played for fun I had to do like 10 dif manual installs and downloads.

    Any information would be appreciated.

Ummm - that really shouldn't be there for download you know. Quake is still a commercial game and it's actually illegal to do that.

If you still have a DOS Quake CD from back in the day I did a writeup on how to install it under Windows 7 here: mhquake: Installing Quake using DOS Box. This also works with Shareware Quake (from ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com). You can also buy Quake on Steam for about the cost of a beer or two, in which case you'll get a Windows version that doesn't need much in the way of jiggerypokery to get installed and working.

You'll likely want a replacement engine for sure, but which one to use depends on your needs (and what kind of hardware you have). I recommend trying them all and picking your own favourite; they've all got their individual strong points and while there is some overlap each one has features that pretty much none of the others do.

Correct. Oddly, I think the same exact zip is on the Speed Demo Archive. It has the same name, at least. That's scary, since it contains not only the registered Quake files, but also both official mission packs. Very illegal; steer clear of them.

Quake is over 10 years old, who cares if there is a pirate version out? All u peons need to stop whining and need to understand that this game is dead. If u want to waste money on this game, then you sir(s) are fools. Piracy will always live.

ID software will care. The game is their property, they hold the copyright, they still sell it. Old game or not, that is the way that things are. This is not a shrug and forget it thing, so long as the law says that piracy is a crime then you gotta suck on that reality. Worst case scenario. The Clan HDz site gets shut down for hosting pirated software. Do you want that? QuakeOne gets shut down for having a link. Do you want that? The law gets on peoples asses over it. Do you want that?

Me, I understand and sympathise, and think it would be really cool if there was a free version of ID Quake that was available and accessible to all. But the world doesn't work that way I'm afraid. This isn't whining about anything, this isn't tut-tutting, this is about trying to protect people from themselves and ensure that resources we all use and enjoy stay that way.

If nobody cared, the ESA wouldn't have a reporting form for this sort of thing:
              http://www.theesa.com/piracy/index.asp

Clearly you pirated the game. You wouldn't mind if I reported you and Clan HDz, right? After all, they're not going to do anything... They don't care!

Yeah but not here. We run a legitimate site.

So I bought the old retail version of Quake for Mac and have followed all the instructions possible.... and still cannot install the game and/or its mods for my dad (he loves this game). What do?

I don't like piracy, but what I even like less is denunciators and bootlickers of organizations like the ESA.

I own a legit copy of Quake and id deserves to be paid the few bucks they want for the game, absolutely no doubt about that here. But to denunciate people, omfg.

Hmmnn maybe its early in the morning but I dont see the original poster requesting any downloading of quake, but just some instructions requested.
It is pretty straight forward until you run into issues like OS/graphics compatability issues etc.
