  • Quake 1 Mission Pack 1 doesn't start

    Hi

I have a problem with Quake 1 scourge of armagon. It won't start. I click on the icon and then a DOS prompt screen comes up and then shuts down. That is all that happens every time. Quake 1 works fine, can somebody help me get scourge of armagon working on my PC. I have Windows XP O/S 2GB of RAM, Nvidia Geforce 7200LE and an Intel Core 2 duo CPU (1.8Ghz).

Run Quake via command line adding -hipnotic -game hipnotic to command line. Should make it work if it is otherwise installed.

    Example: c:\my_quake_folder\fitzquake085.exe -hipnotic -game hipnotic
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

No need for the -game parameter. Just -hipnotic is enough.

        It still doesn't work.

I type e:\Quake\"QLAUNCH.exe" -hipnotic then the quake screen appears then disappears. Any advice.

Have you tried running it with any other executable?

What other executable do you mean? You mean like WINQUAKE.exe or GLQUAKE.exe?

qlaunch is something different. I'd recommend winquake.exe.

I tried using 'E:\Quake\WINQUAKE.exe -game hipnotic' and it says you must have the registered version to use modified games. I got the game from a bit torrent file. Is that why it says that?

Anyway I tried 'E:\Quake\GLQUAKE.exe -game hipnotic' and it says the app has failed to start because glide2x.dll was not found. Reinstalling the app may fix the problem.

Anyway I opened the armagon.bat file and the command in the file said: 'E:\Quake\Quake.exe -game hipnotic -hipnotic. So I tried putting that in the command line interface and it came up with this:

                Quake v1.07
                Locked 1 Mb image
                Locked 11 Mb data

See that link on the Site Navigation pane that says "Buy Quake"? Try clicking that.

Also delete the opengl32.dll from your Quake directory (depending on the version of it you have this may be a hidden file, so you may need to turn on "show hidden files and folders" in Tools | Folder Options). That just exists for old 3dfx cards.

And last but not least '-game hipnotic' must be changed into '-hipnotic' as mentionned by Spirit earlier...

Ok I changed -game hipnotic to just -hipnotic when I use WINQUAKE and GLQUAKE and I got a different error this time:

                        W_LoadWadFile: couldn't load gfx.wad

I also deleted opengl32.dll from quake directory.

                          hhmmmmm, sounds weird.

Are you able to open .pak file ? If yes, please have a look into hipnotic folder and look for .pak file, open it and look for a ./env/gfx.wad folder... If it is missing there, it explains it all: the pak file is incomplete.

gfx.wad should be in the root of the PAK, not in env, and even if it fails to load from a mod it should load from ID1 instead, so you've got something set up wrong.

Can you confirm that you have the following:

                            E:\Quake
                            E:\Quake\WinQuake.exe
                            E:\Quake\GLQuake.exe
                            E:\Quake\ID1\pak0.pak
                            E:\Quake\ID1\pak1.pak
                            E:\Quake\hipnotic\pak0.pak

Delete any quake.exe you might have - that's a DOS application and won't work on XP.

The handiest way to run it is to use WinQuake - that will work on XP and you won't get any potential weirdness from graphics card incompatibilities. If you want a 3D accelerated version we can come to that later on, but for now let's just get the basics working OK.

                            Start.
                            Run.
                            E:\Quake\WinQuake.exe -hipnotic

                            Exactly as typed.

                              OK

                              I have got E:\Quake
                              I have got E:\Quake\WINQUAKE.exe
                              I have got E:\Quake\GLQUAKE.exe
                              I have got E:\Quake\IDI\PAK0.pak
                              I have got E:\Quake\IDI\PAK1.pak
                              I have got E:\Quake\hipnotic\Pak0.pak

As for deleting quake.exe because it is a batch file I can do that but I have more batch files in the directory, should I delete them too? Like Q95.bat and WQ.bat. And then there are the ones in hipnotic directory = armagon.bat, listen.bat and dedicate.bat. The thing is there is MSDOS batch files and then there are MSDOS applications. Should I delete both types?

I could open the Pak0.pak file in hipnotic by going to the properties and making it open with notepad. All I saw was like commands for like binding the controls and mouse and sound and various other settings. Then there was a bunch of lines of random symbols and then MAP and CGI settings and locations.
