Nope, needs something to open it.
Where exactly do I change the file to .cmd? It's no where in the properties tab.
Who would win: a death knight, or a gremlin with a double-barrel?

Should just simply need to rename them. You must have "Hide extension for known file types" enabled - in which you'd need to change settings. So here's it in .cmd (delete the others before putting these in)

      Also just try this:
Start->Run (or hold WindowKey and while holding it push R)
      type in:
      C:\Quake\Dark Places\darkplaces.exe -rogue
And see if it starts Quake in the mission pack 2 (without having to select it in mod menu)

Well slap me and call me Sally. File extension hide was on.

But I used the run command and everything went smooth! I can't thank you enough!

Try these. I found a bat to exe tool which allows also icons.
So place in same folder as Darkplaces.exe and now just run the matching exe's and see if they work. Working great from my end

Download Exe-Boot.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

For all - these are just a glorified shortcut (bat file), just in exe format and has a matching icon. Needs to be in same directory as Darkplaces.exe to run - wont work elsewhere. You can however create a shortcut on your desktop of the Mission Pack 1.exe to your desktop and it works.

That works aswell! Thanks for the various options, OoPpEe.

One final note of concern: If I make an episode PAK with Oblige (google it, awesome level generator, ESPECIALLY for DooM-but Quake levels are a bit glitchy), and then make a folder for it called "random", could I execute it like I do the mission packs?

Nope those can be ran from the mods menu. It's Nehara and the Mission Packs that need the special command to run properly. Those are the only that need it (to my knowledge).
