  • Updating Quake with mods, need help!

    Hi,
    I recently started playing my steam edition of Quake again after I downloaded the Ultimate Quake Patch, making the game enjoyable to play, and hearing Quake's music for the first time, nice!

    There are several things I want for Quake, one of them is the DP pretty water mod making the water transparent and reflective, I made that one work by myself.

    There are some other mods I want to use and this is where I need your help, for I am not very experienced in this matter. Here I go:

    1. Improved texture quality. I have downloaded the Rygel DP texture pack(high), but I dont know how to use it, I dont get what the readme wants me to do. Again, very little skill in using mods, I need someone to guide me through the process please.

    2. I have found new models for some of the monsters that I want to have in the game, found on this site. From the forum threads, It's the Shambler High-Poly Model by Andrew Joll, Grunt using Moo's player model, Generations Mod: Tabun's Enforcer, Shambler Castle - Vore, Scrag, Fiend + Gibs (Version 2).

    3. The ogre and zombie aiming mod looks tasty, I'd love to have this as well.

    It's quite a lot I want but working through the list items one at a time I might make it. Please help me! Thanks for reading.

    All of the work I've done are quite easy to install. Inside the zip file is a PK3 file, just simply place them in your:
    ..../quake/id1/ folder

      if you want best textures id recommend downloading QRP textures plus normal maps instead, they look waaay better IMO then the one in rygel's pack

      and another recommendation, try getting seven's small mod compilation too, it adds some awesome small things to quake which really add to the game without changing the gameplay

      just like with the other add-ons you got, just simply drop the PK3 files into the ID1 folder inside your quake folder

          well... that thread originally wasnt about add-ons. you hijacked my thread with your talk about add-ons

          lol jk. after a bunch of posts you talked about saying i most likely hadnt found every add-on for quake yet on the forums, and after that it went that way instead of being about the question i originally started the thread with



          anyways, for arcodus: to add to what seven said, the posts about add-ons in my thread start at the bottom of the second page
          theres some links to awesome stuff for quake which makes quake look even more awesome then before.

          and yes, i agree with seven, theres lot more then rygels pack, there are lots of things around which look a lot better then rygel's pack. not saying its bad, but theres even nicer stuff then from that pack around

            Thanks for replying, all! I got the textures up and running, splitterface, looks great! then the pretty water died, but I found a newer version of that mod and water looks top notch again.

            Now I will try getting them monsters upgraded!

              welcome arcodus

              btw did you also make sure to set offsetmapping and reliefmapping on both?
              otherwise the normalmaps wont do anything at all.
              if you didnt turn them on, try opening the console (press ~) and type
              'r_glsl_offsetmapping 1' and then 'r_glsl_reliefmapping 1' in the console.
              then all textures on the walls and floors/ceilings will be bumpmapped which looks amazing

              btw for monster, you could try either Reforged Skins for Monsters or fraggers hi-res Monsters skins
              personally i use a mix of both which i put together myself cuz some from fraggers are better and some from reforged are nicer.
              if you want i can upload the mixed pack for you which i packed myself in pk3 for easy use

                  sure, lemme put them all into one pack and upload them

                  here is the my own pack which i put together by selecting the best skins from reforged and fraggers, and added the classic chton and classic shambler by lightning_hunter: Splitter's monster-compilation

                  its packed as pk3 already, so just drop it into your ID1 folder to use

                      Relief mapping command is 'r_glsl_offsetmapping 1' + 'r_glsl_offsetmapping_reliefmapping 1' but it provide barely noticeable difference at the cost of cutting fps in half, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you have sli/cf with top cards. Offsetmapping 'r_glsl_offsetmapping 1' looks good enough imo.

                      Both packs are 90% redudant, but in first you also get folder with alternate/optional content to play with further so it contains almost everything what is in second plus some more.
                      Quake HD: Embrace the decline and have some guilty pleasure with it, or join a club for monocled gentlemen at quaddicted and play Quake the way it's meant to be played.

                            Hey Splitterface, could you recommend mod/skins that improves the look of health and ammo boxes, power ups like Quad damage, and weapons, both those that are on the map and those in your hands?

                            Also, I am enjoying your monster skin compilation!
