  • can't play on ANY quake servers [seriously]

Hi, I'm gone for a week and come back ready to play and something's seriously wrong. I connected to shmack and it was on e1m7 which my computer/modem hates running mulitiplayer on, and the frame rate is ridiculously low and the same couple sounds keep repeating over and over, until a new sound or two comes along and is repeated over and over. The frame rate is about the same as a strobe light on it's lowest setting.
Here's the wierd parts [it gets worse]: even when I move my mouse [to look around] the frames are still strobey/choppy. What's also strange is quake runs perfectly in single player, but I experience the same problem when I connect to any server on any map, empty or not.
Another strange thing is I kept getting hung apps on my IE explorer [kept freezing] before I could even get the chance to google "OMG help me " so I scanned for viruses but nothing came up Obviously I got my explorer fixed, but I'm still baffled and distraught over Quake problem. If anyone read my whole post thank you and thanks to anyone in advance if they can help me out a bit

This sounds like you have spyware or a worm because your problem is not specific to Quake and I already know you are using a decent Quake client. If guessed right, the reason that it is choppy is something else is using your bandwidth.

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager and click Processes

You should see something like this (I just Googled for an image, this isn't mine):

You might see something using a lot of CPU cycles.

If you are lucky, this try:

Online virus/spyware scan by very large anti-virus company:

      http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

      Or try AdAware 6.0

      http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...ml?tag=lst-0-1

If one of those don't fix it, you are more than likely in for some pain.

      Let us know what happens.

That's the funny thing, I opened my taskmanager and would would wait for my dial-up connect to be at %0 and my system idle would be at like 96-99 [all others at 0 except maybe x1exec or something else basic like that at 2] so I'll check out those links thank you

Edit: My Uso de CPU would be at %00 - 1 or 2

Ps. I'll erase my post in quake main forum

Ps.s.ps If I've been hacked I know who it was

Hmmmmm, I wonder, If I filled my Quake folder with too much other "stuff" would that cause any problems? My quake folder= 142MB

I don't think it's very likely you got hacked:

            1. Seems like most dialup users don't have a firewall. Most broadband users anymore have a hardware firewall, so it might be something simple like a worm if I guessed about this correctly. Windows XP? Worms are easy to fix if you can just get the right kind of virus scan software running on your computer (ironically worms are annoying because they make your internet slow making this hard to do, especially on dialup)

            2. Dialup users usually don't keep current with Windows updates. I'd stop using IE and start using FireFox. If Windows updates are hard because they take forever on dial-up and if you can't do them regularly, IE is a disaster waiting to happen.

If you are having problems when Quake isn't running and have more than 200 MB free hard drive space available, that can't be the reason.

Windows 98, right? (I'm just guessing).

If so, that was a real "interesting" operating system. I got "nuked" once by a botter in 1999 (those were interesting times, no IP masking ... caused me to get a firewall).

A friend of mine told me how he had got his ISP account cancelled back in the day because he used a script to display the files on people's computers, it would do one IP at a time.

That had to have been the least secure operating system ever.

One more detail [in case it helps] When I connect to a quake server the time it takes to connect is normal, it doesn't say 'trying.. still trying.." or anything like that, UNTIL it displays the map name, then I get "client to server keppalive" messages, about 3 or 4, and the console slooowwwwwly goes up. Also when I say something it goes right through and ping displays in rankings about normal, maybe a little higher but not enough to cause whats happening. What I'm trying to explain is I don't think (99% sure) that something is dragging or sharing my internet connection, I think it's soley the quake application [all other internet applications working fine at the moment] and quake is my only program running with no side processes running [at least at the time right before I run wqpro.exe] Anyways hope that helps narrow it down thanx again

Hmmm, as long as we're on the subject is it average to have about 2 unsolicited connection attemps to various ports on your computer every 5-10 minutes? This computer in Bejin China won't leave me alone along with a few others and some more random unsolicited connections.... Just wondering, sorry if I keep replying to my own thread hope that's not considered spamming...

OK, This wierd *UPDATE* I ran Quake in windowed mode while my task manager was still open (probably should have done that in the first place) and "wqpro.exe" uses 90-95% of my CPU usage [once I'm connected to a server, normal in single player] there are no other programs slowing it down, quake itself is somehow demanding almost all of the cpu power [in some moments total CPU usage is 100%] as if it has been modded somehow to hang/freeze itself, although it doesn't actually crash it did once when I closed the taskmanager b4 closing wqpro. *sigh* this sucks.....

Sounds like you need a firewall for starters. With Sygate being no more, I'm not sure what is a good free one to recommend.

Btw, it could be your Quake ... I mean, it is at least POSSIBLE. What Quake client are you using?
